I've noticed that lately I can't go farther than the same room as my Airport Extreme AP, without losing connection. It still shows the black bars on at the top like it's picking up, but nothing. I go back to the same room as the AP and everythings fine. I've tried to change the AE to .11g only, .11b only and both a & g. No go. I've noticed that my wife's 12" powerbook is acting the same. The only thing I can think is that maybe it's because of the latest software? I have the same results when either connect to my linksys AP. I tried my IBM stinkpad with a orinoco card and no problems. My PB's use to pick up as good as the IBM. It seems like is mainly with web stuf. I can ping my gateway and other ip's just fine, just like it does no where to route.
Anyone else having the same issues??
Thanks,
Hall

I changed the orientation of my AE station just for fun last night, and to get better reception in certain parts of my house. So I got out my 20' ladder and mounted the little guy upsidedown on the cross-beam running through the center of the house (my house is an 1800 sqft log cabin w/ vaulted ceilings and exposed rafters). I used a loooong extension cord for power and a 30' Cat5 patch cable to hook up to my switch (I have the cables running along on top of the beam so you can't see them). When my living room lights are off it looks like a UFO hovering over the room, those blinking blue LEDs are very cool.
All I can say is WOW, my reception all over the house is much, MUCH, better. I get 3-4 bars of signal in every part of the house now, except the basement which only gets 2 bars. That's not a big deal, the basement is mostly unfinished and I use it mainly as a workshop/storage.
I'm very happy with the results.

PB12 and AE here. To get good reception throughout my whole house I needed to play with the mounting locations a bit, but I never had an issue where the wireless had as short of a range as you're describing. Do you have access to a non-apple laptop to work on ruling out problems?

I put my AEBS in a lousy place that happened to be convenient while I was setting it up. I expected to wall mount it later nut it hasn't been necessary at all. I get 3 bars with occasional dips to 2 anywhere in the house, and it's never lost the connection. Since I added the second BS, bridged, for my upstairs computer I pretty much get 4 bars everywhere. Not the biggest house in the world, but big enough.

The wierd thing is the signal around the house has been fine. Now lately it's bad... I brought home some of my wireless rf tools from work.. oh yeah!

just used my little handheld survey jobber..
i'm getting around 50% strength anywhere in the house. I checked the places it use to work.. signal is fine. i did notice that my 17" had about 90% failure rate in beacon request.
my stinkpad works fine in every room.. my other 12"PB seems to be ok (sometimes)
you know what this means.. another wasted evening confusing the "techs" at applecare... piss.. here i go again.
do you think they will tell me to reinstall the os or check permissions first? any bets?

Did you guys try changing the channel from Automatic to something different (in the Aiport Admin Utility)?
I had similar issues with my AE. Now it is fixed.

Make sure you have the latest Airport Updates from Apple (3.0.2) and take the advice of the previous poster and set the basestation to whatever channel gets the best reception. Oh, and the updates include a firmware update for the basestation so be sure to check that.
