Hi, I have the first gen Ti400 and have been looking for either an Al 15" upgrade or a PB 12". My univeristy has an open box PB 12" superdrive model for $1690. Should I go for it, or should I wait for the soon-to-be-here Al 15" or the Rev. B 12"? I moved from PB2400c to the Ti and really loved the screen size, but I miss the portability of the small PB. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here's my advice, if you can wait and having a new computer right this moment isn't a dire necessity, then by all means wait! Even if the new 15" AlBooks are unveiled this summer at prices you can't afford, either of two other things will happen in conjunction. The 12" AlBooks will either be updated as well, OR, the current 12" AlBooks will be even cheaper than the offer you're currently looking at, so it's a win-win situation if you can wait.

Just to throw some in the other side of the balance, if you want it now, the 12" Powerbook is, simply put, a helluva machine.
Buy it now, and you will NOT be disappointed.
Seriously.
But, if you can afford to wait, then by all means do.
You're missing out on the most gorgeous piece of kit though - and transportable as hell (I keep it in the very nice Timbuk2 sleeve.)

I would say if you need it now, buy it. I bought my TiBook because I need it now. If you can wait, wait.
And pardon the off topic question but:
(I keep it in the very nice Timbuk2 sleeve.)
What's a sleeve? I saw a pic on the Timbuk2 site and ended up more confused. I thought it was a padded, well, sleeve that you could use to put your laptop in any bag (messenger/backpack). But the one on the site has handles and all. Plus, it costs 60 bucks? I'm slightly confused.
Thanks for any help

CompUSAs across the country are clearing out the 667Mhz machines at $1499.
THAT is a great deal.
If I didn't like the plastic finish on my son's 14-inch iBook (great for kids especially due to the durability and always looks great) I'd probably spring for one of those for him.

Who really cares if a new machine comes out next week? Are you looking to have the "top-of-the-line, fastest, biggest phallus", or are you looking to have an excellent computer that serves your needs?
I just got a 12"PB yesterday, and I like it. If a new 12"PB comes out tomorrow, mine will still be just as good as it is today.

No one said it wouldn't be good, but what's wrong with smart buying? If he doesn't need it right this minute, he'd be MUCH better off being patient and getting an updated machine for when he does need it...it's just smart.

It might be considered smart if there were any solid indication of an update. There are rumors. The rumors don't even have solid dates. If he waits until the end of July, what happens when there are no updates? Should he continue waiting? What if there are more rumors at that point saying he should wait until September? How long do you wait when there is no real evidence of a release date?

On the 16th of April this year I said: Sod This! I'm not waiting for the Albook...I wanted a TiBook, and i got one...And I've not been dissapointed!
Yes, there may be a 15" Albook...maybe end of July...But I just couldn't care...I'm not gonna sit with a Rev. 0 machine and go through tons of updates just to get the thing working as a Rev. B machine should.
If you want it now....Buy it...If you can wait and let your money grow in the bank...Then wait, by all means.

If you always wait for the next generation, which will surely be better, faster and more reliable, you'll never buy a computer at all.
At some point you need to just find something that's close enough to perfect, buy it and be happy.
And if the next model really is that much better, sell the first one, after all, Macs have excellent resale value.
