My dad owns a iBook 500/384MB/15GB, but he wants too squeeze everything out of it. So I'm wondering what type of hard drive is in there. I can't ask him right now too look at Apple System Profiler 'cause he's on a bussiness trip and he has his PC-laptop with him (and the iBook is somewhere in France). Anyway, I wan't to know this because I want to exhange the hard drive for a faster one, max out the ram and tweak OSX. So I want to know the following: is it a 4200 or 5400 rpm ? and what make/type is it ? And optionally: the hard drives power consumption. I really don't want to see more power consumption due to the new HD. If it's not worth it, I'll try to talk him into an iBook 900 or 12" PowerBook, so I can have the iBook 500 as a "download-and-play-with-unix-computer" next to my PowerBook 867.

thanks

It's a 2.5 inch 4200 RPM hard drive, probably Toshiba or IBM. But the manufacturer doesn't matter. You can replace it with any 2.5 inch hard drive. Well, not any drive. It absolutely cannot be thicker than 9.5 millimeters. So you can put any 9.5 mm 2.5 inch drive in there.

Power consumption is nearly the same for all hard drives, with the 5400 RPM drives consuming just a little bit more power. I put a 4200 RPM drive in mine because it cost less than a 5400 RPM drive.
