I used to have a Pismo - which must have had a primitive Audio system - because it worked instantly.

I now have a WideBook 17" and when it makes the alert sound - or any sound after a length period of silence the following happens:

Wait between half a second and a second.

speakers gently pop (I assume powering-up)

then there is the sound.

This is quite annoying - does anyone else have this?

The Audio system seems to go to sleep after about 30seconds of inactivity.

Yep, don't be bothered or worried by it, it's just normal. It's simply nother "power saving" feature that's found on newer notebooks, including the 17" PB. It goes hand in hand w/ the constantly variable fan as well.

this problem is the worst irritation I have with my 17"

it is powering down the audio system to conserve battery juice. when it wakes up the whole system hangs for a second. they REALLY need to fix that.

you can download a work around, check versiontracker.com for the keepsoundawake app it emits a inaudible sound every 20 seconds to keep the audio system powered up. many people are happy with this, yet my install doesn't ever seem to work

similar problems i've had. the pop sound bothered me some.. i think there's a difference in behavior depending on whther or not the PB is plugged in, or on batter power.

I like the idea of the power saving feature, frankly, I'd rather have the additional power for work than sound.

However, it would be a good idea for Apple to make this feature a user modifiable preference in the energy saving preference.

It's not just "newer laptops" - this also occurs on my iBook/700 (May '02) in 10.2.6 and I also find it annoying.

Then by all means, install KeepSoundAwake! I've done it and it completely eliminates the problem!

keepsoundawake does not work on my 17"

I wish it did, the damn pause for the sound to turn back on is my only gripe about this thing, it is very irritating. yes it was installed correctly and the checkmark is checked

That's odd cuz it works fine for me

It shows up in the Other pane in sys prefs, right?

If you've checked the checkbox it means that KeepSoundAwake is inactive when you're on Bat power. Is the PB plugged in or not? Or doesn't it work either way?
