software update just gave me the "Slot Combo Drive Update":

"This update installs new firmware on PowerBook and Xserve combo drives. The update prevents combo drives from intermittently failing to eject discs. It's recommended that you install this update to ensure that your combo drive avoids this problem.

Your drive may or may not need to have firmware updated; installing and running this update will tell you if updating is required."

It downloads a "Slot Combo Drive Update" application to the Applications/Utilities folder, then runs it for you.

My drive didn't need updating (its Device Revision is BA21 in Apple System Profiler), but if you update it says you'll need to restart.

I installed the update and my 12" Powerbook needed the firmware update. It installed just fine. Maybe the machine will run cooler now

I'm hoping Apple really issued the firmware for heat but didn't want to tell us

You're right. It's only for 12-inch PowerBooks with DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives.

Is this update ONLY for the 12-inch PowerBooks? Does it not effect the 15" tiBooks?

I need some help with a similar problem. I restarted and wanted to put in another boot cd so I held down f-12. The cd came out funny and then the drive made this beeping sound.

Now I cant insert any disks. When I force it it will go in all the way -- but then will spring back out when I let go.

This is a hardware problem right? -- nothing this firmware update will fix?

yeah, this happened to me with the Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street album, where it would make grinding noises and not eject until i restarted. hopefully this update will fix that.

the grinding noises you heard may have been the music, and "refusal to eject" beautifully sums up the stones' career in the past twenty years.

hope this clears it up!

(only kidding, i'm actually a big stones fan!)

I have a situation - I installed the combo drive update on my 12" even though I have a superdrive. Will that cause any trouble or is there any way I can undo the software update??

Did you just download the update? To fully install it you have to actually runt he "Combo Drive Update" in /Applications/Utilities (brushed metal application, hard to miss). I'd be extremely surprised if that let you proceed on a superdrive.
