I heard that the light gray edge is carbon fiber, but my friend is saying that it's not. so what is it?

My watch worse a hole in my PB along the edges. It indeed appears to be carbon fiber - why they had to paint it, I dunno.

I had always understood that it was painted carbon fiber, and that the frame itself works to stiffen the case.
