So is the drive in the TiBook and AluBooks simply the UJ-815 without the front bezel, or is there some other modification to the case design? I'd suspect the former, but I'm not 100% sure.
If the former, then it shouldn't be too hard to replace it with your own. I suspect that's what the MCE upgrade is.
Now OS X support is another matter. The drive would most likely work with Toast, but I'm not sure about iTunes or iDVD.
(My old Panasonic LF-D311 Firewire drive works fine in iTunes 3, but my newer Panasonic LF-D521 does not. Both work fine in Toast.)

Next question is, what firmware does it have and can that firmware be installed onto the SuperDrive in our 17" PowerBooks?

I suspect they've just replaced the firmware for -RW compatibilty. Would love to see what xvi at the Firmware page can do with it...

2x DVD-RAM writing, eh??
i would LOVE that functionality on my powerbook. like a 4 gig removable disk. perfect for document editing and storage. leaves me free to clutter my HDD with more music and video!

It's probably just the standard Panasonic firmware, which would include that functionality.
It would most likely work with Toast methinks, but might not with iTunes and possibly iDVD. The only way to know is to try it and see.

Well, I emailed that address off of the pdf on that page you provided Eug, asking the differenes between the A drive and B drive. According to a 'Dana Berzin':
"The UJ-815-A series is sold to Apple only. The UJ-815-B series will be sold to the general public and will be available
June/End from these fine Panasonic distributors:"
So is there a possibility that the A version is not only firmware crippled but possibly hardware crippled as per Apple's request? I dont know enough about this to make any speculation on that, although I sure hope not. If I do recall, when that image of the drive was first online back in October, it was the A version and supported DVD-RAM.
I'm going to reply and see if he will tell me anything more.

If this is an exact fit I'll be very interested in installing this into my 17" PowerBook if it enables me to use DVD-RAM directly within OSX - I wonder if the existing SuperDrive would then fit into my 800DVI PowerBook?

If it'd be less hassle than my Superdrive (and allow me to use R/W and -RAM) then I'd consider putting it into my Ti, too...
Wonder what my Apple drive would be worth.

So who's going to try it? My TiBook is only 3 months old, so I'm not going to risk my warranty just yet, but I would be very interested in this.

Got another reply... I asked about any differences in sizes, hardware connection, bezel, and I got another simple response.
"The main difference between these two models should be in the firmware: The
"A" model will have Apple-specific firmware and the B-model will have
Microsoft OS-generic firmware."
So I guess it should fit.
