Impossible, everyone know Apple announces products like this and says "and it will be available in two months", which of course turns out to be four. I mean, I would be in complete disbelief if Steve actually said, "And the new 15" Al Books are available as of today". Would definitely be looking for flying pork.

Yeah right, like Apple would really have accumulated a massive stock of 15" Ti's if they were gonna introduce a new 15" Al. I mean common guys, if you just stop and think about some of this stuff it just doesnt hold up. You gotta reckon that Apple knew at least 12 months ago that they were gonna introduce Al 12" and 17" powerbooks, i.e. about 6 months before they were announced. Given that, don't you think they would throttle off the 15" Ti production lines in good time for any new 15" anouncement. This is 2003 we are living in, not 1903. Just in Time manufacture and stock control is practically universal nowadays (or not just in time as far as the 17" went). Especially for a computer company like Apple. All production/inventory is gonna be pretty well managed, you can bet on it. If anything this would lead to stock shortages, like those seen with the iPod months before its recent update, not overstocking!! If there are wharehouses full of 15" Ti's it is a sure sign that Apple aint introducing no 15" Albook anytime soon.

This is the third time I've seen this rumor (that the new machines are boxed up and ready to go). The first was late January, the second was March, and now here we are in late May.

Eventually, the rumor will be proven right, but I'm skeptical now.

Regarding Apple never having a new product ready to ship: that's not true. It may have been the case with the PB 17", but the Ti 800/667s and Ti 1Ghz/867s were available as soon as they were announced. Apple prefers to do it that way. Sometimes it's not possible, but it's more commom for new products to ship right away than it isn't.

The Ti 1 GHz SD machines weren't available until many weeks later. Sure they were announced and available for immediate order, but you couldn't actually get one.

And all from O'Grady. Which would mean that production of TiBooks stopped months ago. So explain how it is that you can still order a custom configuration Ti with a quoted ship time of 1-3 days. To me, that says that TiBooks are still coming off the assembly line.

Well, Eug, the 1Ghz model did ship a little later, but it was hardly "many weeks" later. Some retail stores had machines a little more than a week after the announcement (Nov 6). They were getting shipments a few units at a time, so they sold out quick....

People in the US with online orders did not begin to receive their units until about 3 weeks after the order. And these included units ordered within an hour of the announcement.

Some stores started getting them at about the 2 week mark, but these were fairly few.

Around here (Toronto), you couldn't even see a TiSD until about a month after the announcement.

A reasonably well run company like Apple is not going to ask the manufacturer to start building anything until they are ready to sell it.

Manufacturers are not exactly constrained in capacity (low PC sales in general), and are very dynamic in their capacity.

Maybe a few hundred or even thousand demo units, but it might be rather foolish to envision warehouses full an unreleased product unless they expected every possible buyer to order via their web-site on the day of the announcement.

Now... with the anticipation of the PB15"AL, maybe they do have a warehouse full...

The new 15" is not a major annoucement, and as a result they won't need to wait until the WWDC or Macworld to release it. I really doubt Steve is dying to present yet another Al laptop with the same specs and processor as the others, with the only difference being a new screen size.

If the new 15 ships with a 1GHz processor I'm going to bitch slap somebody. I don't seem them making it faster than the others and I don't see a speed bump coming this quickly, but a guy can hope.

I am so ready for the next version of the 15 inch PB but the signs are really conflicting. The 15 inch Ti book is going on 7 months since the last speed bump. The recently introduced 17 inch PB clearly shows the direction in PB design. On the other hand the impending release of the 970 chip and the lack of a faster G4 chip argue against an imminent upgrade. Spice that up with three or four rumors about 15 inch PBs already under construction and you are left with utter confusion.

If this particular rumor is true and some have been made up perhaps those are demo machines for WWDC and not production units?
Happy owner of a new 15" Al PB.

O'Grady's PowerPage is notorious for spreading unsubstantiated rumors. I wish they'd stop spreading rumors they don't know to be true beyond a shadow of a doubt. It's terrible journalism.

I can't imagine if I were one of those people who got the brand new 17" Powerbook and then the 15" comes out with a 1.25Ghz processor. I'd be PEEVED.

He's VERY lucky, but as I'm sure you're aware, he was not representative of about 99% of Macheads, if this forum is any indication.

With the announcement today off price cuts on the 12" and 15" PBs, it NOW it seems that there will be a new 15" sooner rather than later. I would guess within the next 3/4 weeks. Particularly as this is a US only price cut, rather than a global price readjustment - supporting the idea that it is aimed at clearing stock rather than adjusting price points. Whether or not this means G4 1.25 ghz or 970 1Ghz is something we will just have to wait and see! Either way, I now think it is highly likely that the much anticipated 15" AlBook will soon arrive.

Yet another uncomfirmed report of New Skin 15" power books here.

And for those of us who can't read Japanese (and want a little chuckle), click here...

Prices were cut in Japan, Canada and perhaps elsewhere. In Japan I believe that even the price of the 17 inch PB was cut. Perhaps this was due to the weakness of the US dollar versus the Japanese yen.

Prices were cut in The Netherlands too. Even the 17" PB dropped about €300.
