Maybe this is obvious to everyone else, but...
Everyone is talking abou 1GB Ram module on the 12" PB, but no one has mentioned anything of it for the 17"
will these modules work on the 17" so that I could have 2GB of RAM?

I asked that earlier before. No one had a answer. It would be nice if we had that feature.
2 gigs of ram is steller. would it improve the speed though. THe more ram you have the more the app takes. So techniqually you only get a little atvantage I would think.

In the 17" PBs technical specifications .pdf available at www.apple.com/powerbook it clearly states that there's a 1GIG max. for RAM; how true that is remains to be seen.

Hehe, because the 2nd gen. 10gig iPod is now officially my girlfriend's
She loves the 2nd gen. design, and she rules, so I just gave it to her & got myself a 3rd gen. I just bought the 2nd gen. about 4 weeks ago, so she basically got a brand new iPod

LoL, well I like both iPod designs, they both have their strong points in my opinion. I didn't exactly like the looks of the 3rd gen. as much when they first came out, but upon unboxing my own I instantly took a liking to it's appeal, even moreso than the 2nd gen. almost.
But I like either really, the important part is my g/f likes the 2nd gen. most, and that's the one that's hers.
BTW, between the g/f and the iPod, now that's a question that doesn't really require an answer, eh?

It kinda doesn't make sense that the 12" PB can have more RAM than the 17" PB.. It just isn't right

Apple's tech specs page lists a 1GB limit, but the developer note on Apple developer page states that each slot in the 17" will accept a 1GB chip, but the current 1GB ceiling is based on the "highest-density devices currently available," giving a 2GB potential maximum.
http://developer.apple.com/techpubs/...section_7.html
You'll also note that the tech specs page for the 12" powerbook G4 lists a 640MB limit, also based on the "highest density available."
However, the 17" requires PC2700 RAM and the 12" requires PC2100. While you can use the PC2700 in the 12", the 17" requires PC2700 and will not accept PC2100.
Of course, the Powerbook G4 17" can only accept SO-DIMMS that are smaller than 1.5" tall, so it'll probably be some time before we see ones that small at reasonable prices. Much of what's out there right now are dual die package, which are essentially two 512chips grafted to each other, which is too large to work.

Samsung have already shown its prototype of 1GB PC2100/2700 sodimm ram. All we have to do is wait for a couple of months and purchase it and install it to the powerbook.

Hopefully it won't be pricey! What do you think it'll cost? 500USD? 600USD? or more?

I remember when the Pismo came out, the tech notes said it could only take 512mb in total, but I've got mine happily up to 768mb, might get it up to a gig soon.
On a different note, after what javabeans wrote about ram pricing, I had a flashback to when I bought a 32mb ram chip for my Amiga 4000, cost me £1000, nearly $2000, those were the days.

if all this memory stories are true, could the memory ceiling for the tibook/15 also be lifted above the 1G? I haven't been able to find any SDR SODIMM modules larger than 512M...
i guess they won't be produced either...

By the way, I'm surprised that no one mentioned this, but I was under the impression that the 17" had 512MB soldered on the motherboard (like the 128 on the 12"). which would make the maximum 1.5GB of RAM even if you had a compatible chip.

Nah man, the 17" PB has no soldered on RAM, simply 2 open bays for DIMMs.

I know what I was thinking of -- doesn't the base config come with two 256MB chips (thus filling both available slots)? I knew people had been complaining baout something like that, I guess I misremembered it.

You're thinking of the TiBooks, the 17" comes with a single 512MB SODIMM.

Yeahhh, many TiBook users complained that it was a completely ripoff because if your didn't order 1gig as a BTO option, you'd get 512MB, but in a 2x256MB fashion. Thus, both of those sticks become useless should you want to upgrade to 1gig cause you hafta buy 2x512MB sticks.

uber I say. Too bad the same isn't true for powermacs. The QS, now that there are 1gb dimms available, won't take them!!!
> yet the sawtooth can, but heck if I'm going to take that POS motherboard design!

Yes man, I know...it's been a really tough decision, but here's what it boils down to:
With my new 17" PB, I've now had 2 computers at once in my home for the first time in my life, and I can't live without 2 computers running side-by-side anymore, not even in college. So when I enter college, I want 2 computers. PLUS, the smaller notebook will be much more portable going from class to class, and I want to use the leftover cash to get a tower, which is what I'll connect the 23" HD Display to.
I sold the 17" PB on eBay ( seen HERE) and with the cash I bought the parts to custom build a PC that'll be my "always on" machine in my dorm and a *hardly* used 12" PowerBook from a fellow MacNN board member that I'm gonna max out when it arrives. The specs for the PC/12" PB and stuff...
I'm building a Athlon XP powered Shuttle box (SN41G2, in black) with a Athlon XP 2700+ CPU, 1gig of Crucial DDR RAM, 80gig Western Digital Special Edition 8MB cache HD, GeForce FX 5200 128MB w/ DVI-out, Samsung DVD-CD-RW Combo Drive (52x burn), and a 6-in-1 Media Card reader in place of a floppy...this machine will push my 23" HD Display.
As of the time of purchase, it's a bone stock 12" PowerBook w/ Combo Drive (as much of a bragging right the SuperDrive is, I simply never had the first plan of using my 17" PB's SuperDrive, and so I have no really need to burn an extra $200 on it), but I've already ordered a 512MB DIMM to max out the RAM, an AirPort Extreme Card (it was an Open-Box item from MacMall.com for only $66!! When I ordered mine, however, only 32 remained...), and extra 12" PB battery, a MacCase sleeve, a custom Black/Silver/Black Timbuk2 case, and since it's got the 40gig HD, and I saved so much, I went ahead and got the OWC Mercury (coolest looking to me) FireWire/USB 80gig External HD as well. Also, all of my PC parts will ship out Monday so hopefully that'll be built by next week sometime!
And so after my 17" PB sale, getting all the parts for my custom-built PC, and buying the 12" PB for portability around college & buying all those accessories, I still have about $900 leftover for the bank which will certainly come in handy later on...the 17" PB was amazing, but when I could sell it for TWO amazing computers, and get a 12" verison of the same thing that'll be so much more portable at college, I just had to do it, though it stung.

Technically, no. But that's there to prevent me from getting it and selling it immediaitely afterwards and reeping a profit off of it; I'm selling this to purchase MORE Apple stuff.
