I have an ibook 500Mhz Dual USB. It seems that I have accidentaly installed the wrong firmware and this firmware is hampering my efforts to upgrade to OS 10.2 from 10.1
Here's an image of what I get when I try and install 10.2 :
Any attempt to install a new firmware results in an error message 'sorry this firmware does not function on this machine' or something like that. And ive tried all firmware versions possible.
How do I forcibly remove this 4.2.. fimrware from my ibook?
Please help someone

Have you tried downgrading with the installer CD's that came with your iBook yet?

First of all, where did you get a different version of the firmware and why are you installing it? I can't recall any official firmware updates to the dual USB iBooks. If you don't have the one that it came with, then I'd say you're pretty much screwed. You shouldn't be messing with the firmware unless Apple issues a legitimate update.

I installed the firmware because I was under the impression that it was required in order for my ibook to function under 10.2. I may be wrong, in any case I now have the wrong firmware installed and i need to get rid of it somehow.
I've initialized, zerod all date, system software restore, back to 9.1, managed to get 10.1 working but 10.2 just doesnt want to know
Yes I dicked with the firmware, but it was not intentional and now I need help to sort this mess out. Anyone here with constructive comments?

Try resetting the PRAM and NVRAM by typing this after the Open Firmware prompt
> reset-nvram
Press Return
> reset-all
Press Return
This may help you but I'm a bit confused with your screenshot. I dug around the Apple database looking for any ibook formware updates and none of them had the same version that's in your screenshot. Maybe I'm not reading it correctly but the reset might get you back on track. In addition, the articles mentioned the fact that larger RAM modules can be used under 9 but that OS X systems did not need the update.
Good Luck

I'm not really understanding what's happening with your iBook. You only fall into Open Firmware when using the 10.2 install CD?
But the firmware version listed seems to be correct. I have 4.2.0f4 on my iBook 500 Dual USB. (Without ever upgrading it, I believe.)

That's correct yes. On startup with 10.2 CD OpenFirmware appears.
So it seems my firmware version is actually correct? and thats why no firmware updates work on my machine?
I cant understand why my 10.2 disc isn't working then. Ive installed it onto 3 other macs without a hitch. Why not on my ibook?
Are their any other methods I could try of installing 10.2 other than from the CD?
What about installing 10.2 onto my spare Powermac HD and duplicating the contents over to the ibook ?

The G4-G3 won't work. At least it didn't from a Cube to iBook 800.
Have you tried typing "mac-boot"?
I mean that seems to obvious but thats all I can think of.

Can you boot from os 9 cd?
Some apple support guy adviced me to start from os 9 cd, zeroing the drive, and then take a fresh reinstall. Supposely the firmaware should be updatet according to this dude, but I can't verify this. Other MacNN fellows thinks it wouldn't work, but it would have been really nice if you could try this out to see what happens. Worth a try perhaps?

Yeah good tip. Already done total clean installs of OS9 and then tried installing 10.2 from 0S9 but still openfirmware. I've also done a zeroing of all data and also done a clean install with software restore discs. I also tried the Apple Hardware Test disc to check for problems but nothing came up.
