How did you burn it? You probably burned an HFS+ disc.

Yeah, I discovered that burning cd's when I got my powerbook. I got toast and wouldn't use anything else.

I'm very disappointed in apple for this. As a long term mac user (mac classic, powerbook 100 etc) I always loved the ability to write to media that would work in a pc. I think it's a massive step backwards to remove this ability.

Having to spend $$$ for toast just so that I can send a cdrom with photos on it to friends with a pc is crap, particularly in a world where apple have always touted how compatible the mac is with a pc.

I consider Toast to be one of the essential utilities on the Mac.

Other than the disc format issue, Finder burning also has the issue that you are required to have enough free hard disk space to contain a temporary disc image containing a copy of all the data being burned, e.g. if you want to burn a 4.5 GB disc, you need 4.5 GB of free hard disk space. Even if you have the space, it still can take a long time for the files to be copied to the temporary image before you can even think about starting the burn. Toast creates the disc image on-the-fly and uses the files in-place, so the requirements for hard disk space and preparation time are much more lax.

now this is interesting, i have never tried using one of my burned cd/dvd's in a pc so i didn't even know this was an issue. kinda dissapointing now that i hear about it, and i see why 'toast' is so important now.

how bad is this? are we talking 50% of the burned media will not work with the pc or is it a purely random issue?

It's not a matter of burn quality. It's a matter of disc format. Windows does not read HFS+ formatted media without third-party software, so for the average Windows user, no Finder-burned disc is readable.

You need Toast 5.2 or later because earlier versions do not recognize the drive. 5.2 is a free upgrade from 5.0 and later, in case you were worried about such a thing.
