Hey all...

My much anticipated baby arrived today, a 1ghz superdrive 15.2" tibook w/ 1Gb RAM.

I must say... the overall speed of this thing is AMAZING (I'm coming from a 2001 gen iBook 600). I haven't even done any of my typical "optimizations" yet, and it's faster on an immense level.

I just wanted to thank all the regular posters to this forum who offered some good advice (most to others that I later read and benefited from) to help my decision... I couldn't be happier!

One other thing... I had no idea from my brief experience with them in the apple store how much better the screens on the tibooks are compared to the ibook! I was getting the old machine set up for my girlfriend, and the screen was very dim/washed-out looking in comparison.

Thanks again!

If you bought thru the Apple Store then ask for $200 back. The price dropped yesterday, and they have a price protection policy.

PRICES
The Apple Store endeavors to offer you competitive prices on current Apple products and selected refurbished and clearance products. Your total order price will include the price of the product (on the day of shipping) plus any applicable sales tax and shipping charges. Apple reserves the right to change prices for products displayed at the Apple Store at any time.

Should Apple reduce its price on any shipped product within 10 calendar days of shipment, you may contact Apple Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775 to request a refund or credit of the difference between the price you were charged and the current selling price. To receive the refund or credit you must contact Apple within 14 business days of shipment.

I did, in fact, know about the rebate (but thanks for pointing it out!). However, I got mine for about $2500 shipped...

Thanks,

Alex

Actually, I very nearly DID get a 17". However, I went down to the Atlanta Apple Store and tried one out, and I found it to be FAR too large for my needs. Since the performance is essentially the same as the 15, and I got a good deal on this one, I opted for the 15

Don't regret a second of it. While I concede that the 17 is an amazing piece of hardware, it's just too big for me.

Thanks,

Alex

Awesome. Welcome

I got a TiBook too and am still wowed. Don't worry about the 17". The 15" was right for you, as it was for me.

Congrats. If you have any questions ask, this forum is great and people are very helpful.

Enjoy!

What you've posted might be true, but before you sing victory, I ask that you look at the value of your own posts. Congratulating every single person who buys a new PowerBook isn't the most productive use of forum space, either.

Or perhaps it's a friendly way to welcome new posters to the PB forum and offer to help with any questions that might arise?

AssassyN's comments in particular have struck me as incredibly welcoming.

Personally I would think you'd WANT people to welcome folks to the forums w/ their new machines w/ open arms.... that's just one more active/vocal powerbook user to have around!

Thanks,

Alex

I just got a new powerbook as well, but I'm a newbie to macs. What "typical optimizations" do you recommend?

I agree, AssassyN and a few others really go out of their way to make new members feel welcome. I wouldn't go busting his chops just because he has a friendly manner.

Well, in re-installing OSX on my iBook a few times, I found it VERY helpful to enable window buffer compression... and I got the urge and created a dedicated swap partition once which boosted speed a small (but noticeable) amount.

However, I went and installed MOX Optimize on my machine to enable buffer compression.... turns out this machine has so much RAM it's actually FASTER to leave it off, since the performance hit from compressing/uncompressing the window buffers is FAR above the RAM useage when it's not on.... I guess I just wasn't prepared for how cool having 1Gb of RAM was (my iBook had 384Mb, and my last PC had 512Mb).

At any rate... If you feel like doing a dedicated swap partition, that's about all I could recommend... but as a warning it is VERY possible (and in fact likely) that something will go wrong, it's not a terribly straightforward procedure (though there may be some GUI tools available to help with this, I'm talking about doing it the 'ol fashioned Unix way w/ fstab).

Thanks,

Alex

Umm, buffer compression is on by default in Jaguar. Since the PowerBooks support Quartz Extreme, there really isn't anything you can do to speed up the UI.

Well, when I turned it on the old fashioned way things slowed down... so who knows

I realized too late that yes, QE does make tweaking the UI completely unnecessary. I wasn't prepared... with the iBook it was almost unusable without said optimizations... god I love my powerbook!

Yeah...

I can feel it taking hold already. This is easily the best machine I've ever owned... I can already hear myself justifying an upgrade a year from now come tax return time, hehe.

Seriously though, I'm enjoying the PB forum almost as much as the machine.... you guys rock!

Thanks,
Alex

Hmmm, what would I prefer... AssassyN welcoming people to the boards, or seanypez leaking 100% concrete info on upcoming PowerBook or iBook revisions only to backpedal 3 days later and say "it'll probably come I think" then backpedal more to say "well, it should be updated this year" or something....

Why did you even bother coming into this thread sean? Nice derailment. Oops, I'm doing it too. Sorry.

You can say whatever you want to say about my rumor postings, but everything I said turned out to be true in the end. If you were not in the market for a new PowerBook at the time you should not have read them. If they did not entertain you, you should not have read them. It's obvious that the revised iBook I was hearing so much about was the 12-inch PowerBook. The 15-inch PowerBook was updated a week after I said it would be.

Before insult my efforts, I dare you to get some information about the next PowerBook revision and share it with the PowerBook forum. If you hear otherwise from people who have been corrrect about releases in the past, don't squirm. You can't and won't because you aren't willing to go out on a limb to keep people you care about from buying machines that are to become outdated. Even if you could, you would undoubtedly run into the same problems I did. Many people respect me for the money I saved them as a direct result of my posts in September and October which you are so quick to criticize. Until you have something constructive to say, I recommend you keep lurking. No one here respects you for trying to degrade my posts. Your cheap shots at me are getting old.
