Hello everyone,
I just registered after reading a bunch of posts. This is really a great board.
Here is my issue.
I have a 17" PB. When I put it on my lap and tilt it back more than (approx.) 20 degrees the display flops down. This is big problem for me because I tend to use on my lap while sitting inclined, I almost never have it secured on a desk. I have tested one other 17" and it did the same thing. Is there any way to tighten the assembly? Is this a problem on all 17" powerbooks?
I also have a 15" Powerbook and of course this is not a problem.
Thanks - Bob

i would assume that you mean 20degrees beyond say 90 degrees, or do you mean the base? A photo would be great to properly illustrate the situation. i have. i have never heard of such a problem... post a pic if you can...
i doubt there is a way to tighten the assembly without possibly voiding your warranty... but hey, give AppleCare a call.. they will probably say it's not something covered by AppleCare, but maybe you'll be lucky.

Hmmm, that's very odd...if I understand your problem, you're saying that it continues to fall backwards once in your lap instead of staying put, correct?
The reason I say so is that I've noticed the hinge on my 17" PBs display holding it's place extremely *well*, and I haven't played with one that didn't...as stated, I'd give AppleCare a call and see what they say...good luck!
P.S. - WELCOME to the MacNN Boards, great to have you!

Let me try to explain better.
If I were to open my powerbook to the furthest point and then tilt the powerbook straight up so that the base is perpendicular to the floor the display would then flop down to an almost closed position. I do not need the powerbook to be completely perpendicuar in order for the display to come down it only needs to be about 20% beyond horizontal. I am hoping that this is not a chronic problem so that I can send the unit back to Apple to be fixed. I am hoping that several people who own a 17" will test their unit and let me know if it does the same thing.
Thanks, Bob

I understand exactly now...it's closing on you. To my knowledge, and certainly in my personal experience w/ them, this is not a chronic problem and shouldn't be addressed as soon by Apple. I'd definitely give AppleCare a call on this issue.

Tried it with mine. With the screen open all the way I started with the computer parallel to the floor and slowly tilted it towards me to get it perpendicular to the floor; the screen started to close with the base somewhere between 45 and 60 degrees.
