hi,
when i bought my tibook/1G i got the combo drive instead of a superdrive because of the $$$. the combo drive is very good actually, but a bit slow for my tastes.

i've been searching these fora etc. because i might want to replace it with a faster burner or, at a later stage, a dvd burner. other than than one company that sells superdrives i have not been able to find slot-in powerbook compatible drives!

a) where can i get slot-in superdrives or combo's?

b) is the powerbook 12" combo drive (which does 16x burning) compatible with my tibook? eg. could i order one of those and fit it into my PB?

thx

Hello,

As on the forums before, check http://www.esbuy.com/sldvdre.html for uncrippled (but untested in a PowerBook) UJ-815 DVD-R/RW/RAM burner, slot in.

Personally, still looking for a source of the CW-8122, which is a 24x CD-R burner.

couldn't find that esbuy link before posting, sorry. the 8122 would be great for me as well, 8x burning is quite a step back from what i'm used to from my pre-switching life...

would it be possible to flash the pioneer drive (pc or mac based) with apple's firmware, making it a "real" superdrive?

edit:
you can buy the 8122 online at http://www.mini-itx.com/store/default.asp?c=5#p155
for a measly UKP140 (i guess around 200 USD)

Hello,

Wouldn't worry about it, I was mentioning as a reference to have a read up on what the others are saying about it.

I know what you mean, 8x is a tad slow. Though, I suspect 16x-24x would be dangerous - I was at a meeting where people were banging the table and it was disrupting read/burns on my CD-RW's. Even typing hard could upset a burn, I guess! There is a limit to how much you can push out of a laptop drive these days...

Check http://www.wormintheapple.gr/macdvd/ - the A03/A04 appear to have firmwares for Apples, none for the A05 (or A06) yet...

Thanks for the link, may consider it - checking conversions, it's more about $232 US, still cheap! (The UJ-815 is about $330 US, though... could go the extra mile).

(a bit late for a reply)

but the 8122 is in the 12" as well... i would consider it strange that the 12" can support it and the 15" can't. essentially it looks like it is the same drive mechanism.

besides, the 15" can support a 1xdvd-r drive. the data rates are 3600KB/s for a 24x CDR vs. 1350KB/s for a DVDR so that would argue for a no-go.

maybe i need to get an external firewire case. that way i can add a 48x burner easily for whenever i need to get some things done.

The drives (8122 or 815) work on the PB's without any problems I imagine, as you notice, they are in use on other Apple laptops. However, the main concern I have is the faster the drive I suspect it would become more sensitive to vibrations/knocks - I've noticed a few bad reads/burns when people start getting bored in meetings. On a DVD-R at 1x, which takes over an hour, this could be quite a problem! I'm just wondering how many people have had bad burns from hard typing/knocks and vibrations?

An external case would enable the faster burners (such as a 52x CD-R or 4x Sony DRU510 or A06) but you lose a lot in portability...

the problem with internal DVD-R drives is that only 2x is available (for a steep prices as well! $329,-) and that apple chose to limit the firmware to 1x burning... even Eug doesn't know why... so for DVD-R/+R burning I would go the external route anyway because,
(1) costs, an external generic IDE drive is a lot cheaper
(2) compatibility, i want a +R / -R drive like the Sony!

For CDR writing however, the 8x speed just is too slow. 24x like the 12" has would suit me fine. For tat I would not want an external burner but prefer it internally...

anybody tried putting a 8122 into a tibook/15 ?
