My iBooks logic/video card has gone nuts i assume, the screen will glich out and make the machine unusable after about 30 minutes of use...
Apple told me that it looks like my warrenty ran out five days ago, but gave a fax number to fax my packing slip and an explanation too..
Is there any hope of them still fixing it?

Man what tough luck...actually, only 5 days out, you could very well get lucky. All you'd need was a very sympathetic AppleCare rep. to answer your call and he/she could get you a return box out ASAP. Apple's been known to extend their warranties in cases such as yours, and with due explaining, I don't see why they wouldn't.

I feel sorry, hope things will work out. Rule #1 for laptop users: buy Applecare.
I have the same iBook (12" combo 700), bought first week of June 2002 which screen went nuts/dead last week. Go figure, I purchased Applecare just two weeks before, instead of an iPod... (I choose against the iPod because of reading some problems with both of them in these forums, and I rather would have one taken-care thing than 2 "likely" to failure non-taken ones...)

I'm-a trying to wonder, wonder, wonder why you, wonder, wonder why you act so.

Check with your credit card. Many offer an extended warranty (usually doubled for up to a year) for products purchased with it.

You can also ask them to make a concession. It's done fairly frequently, in the retail field, for bigger ticket items.
Good idea to check with the credit card co.

First, did you register the machine the day you bought it? If not, then often your serial # won't be in their system as being registered. What they do in this case, is find out when those serial numbers were manufactured, then give you a date based on that number. This date can be significantly longer than 1 year after the day of purchase. For example, I bought a 550TiBook in Nov 2001, but was able to purchase AppleCare in Jan 2003 by going to the Apple Store and saying, "I don't remember exactly when I got it, but it was about a year ago...I'm not sure though." The moral of the story is, NEVER register your machine; it just gets your serial # in their system with a purchase date.
Now back to your issue. Get that machine backed up before it won't boot at all (which will be real soon now). Take it to an Apple Store (if there is one near you) and show them the problem. Don't say a word about the purchase date; let them look it up. If they have your purchase date on record, don't leave the store until they have agreed to fix it under warranty. Demand to speak to a superior if you get the run around from the 'Genius'. If necessary, pull up the two other logic board threads in this forum and show them that this is not an isolated problem. Remind them that a vast MINORITY of iBook owners read MacNN, and an even smaller fraction of those people post in the forum, thus the problem is much more widespread. I would begin the process really nice, but if they even hint that they won't cover it under warranty get more demanding.
Good luck.
Oh yeah, if you don't have an Apple Store near you, then get on the phone with AppleCare and get them to send you an Airborne Express box so you can ship it to Texas for repair. If you get the run around ask to speak with Level 2 support, who can actually make decisions.

Folks, thank you for your concern, it really cheered me up during this bummer of a time. Anyway, before i read foamy's advice, I wrote a sob story letter to Apple and faxed to a dispatch admin. I must have got a nice one, she made an warrenty exception and they are sending the box today!!!!!!
Thanks again folks, my only concern know is that they actually fix it correctly, from what i have read it seeems like half of repairs come back worse than they went in!!!!!!

Man, buy your stuff in Europe.
2 years (!!!) of warranty, on everything. It's European consumer law, so far adopted in Germany, Italy, Austria, Greece, Denmark, Sweden and Finland.
You don't need Apple Care there
