so my friend asked if I could update her iBook's OS (9 and X), I took the machine home with me.. she also said she was having a few problems..

I saw she's running 10.1 and 9.1, but 10.1 was set as the default.. I went to System Preferences, and there was -nothing- there.. nothing. The only thing there was 'Show All', and when you clicked it, nothing happened.

I installed an OS 9 CD, restarted and booted from the CD.. about 1/3 thru startup I get a bus error, turn extensions off, yada yada, restart.

Boots into OSX (with no option of changing the startup disk.

restart with Jaguar disk, get an install going. about halfway through the install, it just hangs. no go.

I've tried this several times and it's not working. hangs every time.

I've used my G4 OS9 disk(install and restore), AppleCare TechTool disk(OS9), and a few burned OS9 disks with all the diagnostics I like to use (disk warrior, etc.) - all to no avail.. same bus error on booting each time.

This is a 500MHz/DVD/128MB model. Anyone have a n y insight?

the ONLY thing I can think of, concerning the Jag install, is that... it's a burned CD. I know occasionaly DVD drives have trouble reading burned CDs, I'll be getting my original Jag disk tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be able to figure that out.

but why no booting with ANY of my OS9 disks. I don't have access to 'her' OS9 disk, but I'd think I would have the same outcome (bus error) with it too.. I've tried 4 OS9 disks.

lil help?

thanks!

drew

(oh, and would this be the right forum?)

I'm going to transfer a fresh 10.2 system over with CarbonCopyCloner via Firewire TargetDisk mode.

this should work, right?

Have you tried booting from the OSX disc and selecting the option to completely erase the HD. You will be able to start from scratch. Of course, everything would need to be backed up first. I don't know, maybe this will work. It might be a good idea anyway since you were having problems with the System Preferences.

booting from the OSX disc was flaky, as it was a burned copy and I didn't have the original till today.. no worries tho, I copied a fresh system over via Firewire and all was swell. Good show.
