While trying the CD/DVD burning software Dragon Burn I noticed that in addition to the info given in the Apple System Profile, it gives the following specs:

Cache Size: 2 MB
CD-R Speed: 4,8,12,16
CD-RW Speed: 4
DVD-R Speed: 1
DVD-RW Speed: 1

I'm not sure where it's obtaining this information, but it clearly sees the drive as DVD-RW capable. I know there was quite a bit of discussion on this issue.

I have burned and erased a few DVD-RW (some older Pioneer Media from work, have not tried others) and it worked without any problems.

I believe others were having the same success with other media also.

Now, what I want to know is if I can (ever?) use DVD-RAM? Supposably the specs on the Panasonic DVD Burner drive inside our Powerbooks can do it, but it has been disabled via firmware. I really hope not.

12 and 15": No DVD-RW burning. No DVD-RAM at all. 8X CD-R burning.

17": 1X DVD-RW burning. No DVD-RAM at all. 16X CD-R burning.

OEM Matsushita with generic firmware: 2X DVD-R burning. 1X DVD-RW burning. DVD-RAM read and write. 16X CD-R burning.
