I very much want another laptop.

I own an iBook 500 and it's just wonderful, I wish they made it as good at it used to be... is it just me or does the new iBook just a little too white for me... it used to be more silver...

Anway, I'm really considering buying a 15 Ti because of the price drop, but I heard problems with fan noise.

So what problems are there with each G4 choice and do you think any of these will/can be resolved in future versions?

12-- Gets Really Hot

15-- Fan noise

17 -- Well I don't know any, except it cost too darn much and that annoys me. Is that an issue?

Thanks.

I've owned several of the Ti's. Here is a breakdown on the different models:

Ti/500 - Not very noisy, had some firewire issues.

Ti/667 - Stay away. Runs hot and the fan runs alot.

Ti/800 - Great. DVI. Not noisy. Solid.

Ti/1GHZ - Fan runs constantly. Fast. DVD writing.

As always, any of the Ti's can be affected by the paint flaking. I didn't have the paint problem on my 500,667 or 1GHZ but did have it on the 800. Apple fixed it for me free of charge.

My 1Ghz Titanium has basically no fan noise.

The fan only turns on when doing VERY processor intensive tasks.

I guess it depends on which TiBook you get.

I love my SILVER and white 800Mhz iBook that I bought as a close-out at a local Apple Store. Yes, they're silver and white and not all white as they are now.

You might want to call an Apple Store and see if they have any open-box or close-out 800Mhz units. Ours (that we bought for our son) was only $1259.

Good luck.

I second that about no fan noise on my ti. The only time I have ever heard my fan come on was when I was burning a DVD with the pb on my lap.
15" Macbook Pro 1.83 2 GB RAM
Blackbook 13.3 Powerhouse 2 GB RAM
MacMini Dual Core 2 GB RAM (Sadly running Windows Most of the time)
Numerouse Workstations running windows and Linux. Sorry don't have the specs, I don't pay much attention to them anymore. :)

i LOVE the twelve-inch. it really doesn't get as hot as people say it does. i keep it on my bed all the time (no circulation underneath) and its WARM, but not hot.

its a solid machine. pretty fast, small, durable (i just toss it into my backpack. it gets scuffed up, but that's removable with water and a tissue. or even spit if you're desperate)

keyboard's GREAT, but you get that with the 17 inch as well.

I also love my 12 inch. when you can carry it with ease as if you were holding a notebook, that makes it all the worth while, especially for quick trips home during lunch

The 667 DVI model doesn't run very hot and my fan hardly ever comes on. But make sure to distinguish between the DVI and the non-DVI.
Dooby, dooby doo.

Your right, I was speaking of the non-DVI model. Never bought the DVI one.

Less is more.

Get the 12".

If you pay the surplus to get a portable machine, then get a really portable one.

If you want a big fat doorstep that is too wide and heavy to ever carry around, then get a desktop.

Love my 12", it's the best computer I've ever owned (out of the 30+ systems I've had in my life). This little guy is just awesome. Plus, you can get one for only $1600 retail. That's insane! Add $100 to max out the RAM, and another $100 for AE and you're set.

Let's not forget, with the rumors of an impending 15" update, it's AMAZING how cheaply you can pick up a good tiBook these days. Look around the Marketplace forum and see what you can find... I've seen some really stellar deals in there lately (thought avoid eBay if at all possible).

On the other hand, you can't go wrong w/ the 12". I got the chance to play w/ one in the apple store a little while ago... it's a SWEET little machine. I only got the 15 because I really wanted the extra screen real-estate and slightly higher performance (1ghz w/ L3 and the extra 32Mb of VRAM).

I do agree that the current retail price of the 12" does make them VERY hard to pass up. I'm pushing a friend of mine VERY hard in that direction (he's looking at some subnotes from sony etc.), because for price/features it's really hard to beat.
