1. Does anyone have proof that Jobs has let Pixar switch to Windows puters cuz of the speed advantage over Macs? This has been posted here, and I was wondering if it was demonstrably true or only a guess.
2. Why do you suppose Apple no longer uses 5400 rpm drives in the PB's? I bought my TiBook with a 5400 rpm drive more than a year ago and have never had a problem, and I use my puter 8+ every day, even most weekends. Has anyone experienced problems using the faster drives? (Once in awhile, mine does get HOT, but it has never even burped in use.)
3. There is a great thread here about using a FAST external hard drive hooked to a PB for doing video editing. I like the idea, but have a newbie question: do you have to boot from the drive to enjoy its speed improvement over the HD in the PB? In other words, if I just use an external drive for storage, and don't boot from it, will I get the speed increase?
TIA,
Dave

1. Pixar doesn't use Windows, but I think it uses some variety of intel-compatible computer. Big difference.
2. Supposedly the new kind of drives Apple is using are similar in speed to the old-style 5400 drives. Cost might have been a factor as well.
3. I believe you just have to be capturing to the drive or store your video files there.

If you are refering to their render farm - they switched from Sun/Unix to Intel/Linux. They have developed their own render software called RenderMan. The logical reason to switch to Intel/Linux is price and performance. More info here.
If you are refering to their 3D modeling/animation - they develop their own proprietary software systems. Their modeling, animating and lighting software is called Marionette.
I've never heard of them using Windows or Macs.

Hi,
I worked for Pixar for a short time in the 90's, it was a cross of IRIX for the workstations and SUN for the render farms, plus various IRIX/SUN sytems for other tasks.
Like most animation studios, it pays to go down the Windows/Linux route, I prefer Macs running X over any other system, but when it comes to a production enviromnet, the Macs just don't have the range of 3D tools and hardware that the othersw do.
ILM have moved to a mainly Windows/ Linux environment too, macs still being used for certain shots, it all depends on the task in hand and the right tools to get it done.
One thing to think about htough, is that unlike most animation studios, Pixar used a lLOT of proprietory software writtin in-house, whereas others will buy off the shelf software and adapt it to the worklfow and requirements.
One package which I use daily is Softimage XSI, its predecessor was SI 3D which has been one of the more poerwful and common animation tools out there, XSI is a dream to work in and given the right hardware, is a complete joy, it's not on the Mac, probably never will be, but it's one reason to stick to windows.
