Does this update add any cool new features, like 2x DVD burning and 1x DVD-RW ReBurning.

This is not region free, just a normal firmware updater, and it isn't really clear what it changes.

hi all well theres been a thread on this from awhile back, it can be found here .
the firmware seems to be from the 12"powerbook, and for what its worth it doesnt give you the option of burning media faster.

I wouldn't dare to run a firmware update like that on my almost new computer (still have 2.5 years of APP on it). I find there's no problems running DVD's from another region using VLC Media Player. Safer and works just as good.

Strangely I can't get VLC to work with other region disks. Just won't play.

Have you tried opening them with DVD Player first? It obviously will ask you to change the region and stall when you don't, but apparently some DVD's need this to play in VLC. But then, I guess of all people, you'd know, so if it doesn't work, disregard...

It doesn't work for me, even with DVD Player first. How do you do it? What device?

Hmm.. I thought VLC only played disks from other regions on RPC-1 (i.e., unlocked) drives. AFAIK, all recent Macs have RPC-2 drives.
Anyhoo, it doesn't work at all on my Ti 867, whereas it does work (...mostly...) on my QS 867.

Bugger. Sorry everyone, I was misled and didn't check it myself before posting.

DO NOT install this type of firmware unless you're prepared to tell Apple why and how your system suddenly doesn't work correctly.
On my Pismo 500Mhz I tried to install some similar firmware and it turned into a bad scene.
Proceed with extreme caution.

I'm hosting it. Their link goes to the file on my storage space.
It is NOT a region free firmware, as others have said. It is simply the D0CB updater for the 12" AluBook.
It works fine at least for the people who have tried it. I am running D0CB on my 15" TiBook. I can see no changes from the previous D0C4. Others have tried it on their 12" AluBooks. No good reason to do so though, since they already came with D0CB.
However, this firmware is VERY different from the 17" AluBooks DWDB. The 17" AluBook has the faster 16X CD-R burning, and also supports DVD-RW burning. The 12" and 15" PowerBooks have 8X CD-R burning and do not support DVD-RW burning.
Unfortunately, a few 17" owners did not bother to read in the description that it is RPC-2. This update WILL "update" the 17" to remove DVD-RW and 16X CD-R burning capabilities.

Why is it so hard/impossible to "back up" the firmware from the 17" PB? I know nothing about this, so my question is asked out of curiosity.
I'd love to see someone try and take the SuperDrive out of a 17" and put it in a 15" and see what happens. Maybe that guy whose 17" self destructed (the cracked screen guy) will try it?
