Has Apple with the 12" and 17" PowerBooks solved the problem of the keyboards really badly scrating the LCD displays? I don't want to test this for myself.

Keyboards never scratched the LCD. They just transfered dirt, grime, and grease from keys to screen.
The new 12" and 17" don't have that problem at all. There is no need to waste money on a keyboard cover.

I sent my pismo screen back into Apple to get replaced because it was indeed scratched. My TiBook screen also had permanent scratches in it from the keyboard marking. Definitely not just dirt. My 17" doesn't seem to have the problem. The screen is made to sit well off of the keyboard.

My 17" doesn't leave screen marks from the keyboard, unlike every Tibook I owned.

They have little feet to keep the screen clear of the keys, actually, in the top corners.

the keyboard doesn't hurt the screen on pb17, but my nasty finger grime finds its way on there. I bought the marware keyboard pad. works great, and a little of "Bounce" protection too.

I haven't had dirt/grease transfer or scratching with either of my PB12s, and I'm far from gentle with my laptops.

and/or wear latex gloves before using.. I suppose it could be real simple to avoid by just thoroughly washing your hasnds before using.... but some of us are lazy.

Same here I had a 15" (TiSD) and the keys were a problem for the screen, but I bought the ScreenSaver and it helped alot. Then I got my 12" and there is no problem there whatsoever and I don't have anything except a PowerSleeve.
Oh I forgot to mention one of those little screws that hold the screen bezel to at the bottom left is missing!!!! Never noticed it though. And the back left rubber foot fell, I didn't think I'd ever locate it and to think I'd have to send it to Apple to get 'fixed', luckily, by chance I looked down on my mom's floor to see if I could ever locate it and there it was. Right now that little foot is taped to my computer at work for safe keeping!

I also haven't have any problems with my 12" Powerbook. Much better than the 12" iBook I had which left smudges all the way across the screen.

I don't have any little feet in the top corners of my 17" PB. Maybe it's just with the 12"?

No such marks on my 12, but I'm pretty careful in keeping my hands clean. I also place a lent-free cloth between the display and the KB while transporting, but that's more to keep from having any "travel" between the two... I like a nice, snug fit.

Believe it or not, yes you do. They're easy to miss. Look at the two latch slots on the top frame of the LCD now run your finger over the slots and you will feel the two rubber bumpers on each outer edge of the slot. Those are the feet although that is kind of a misnomer. Call them bumpers.

I've found that the's a fairly simple way to keep grime and such off of the screen of a 15" PowerBook: aside from keeping your hands clean, just slide a piece of paper over the keyboard before you close the lid.
I'm serious - since I got my system in December, I haven't had problems so long as I put a blank sheet of paper over the keyboard. I'd like the protection that the 12" and 17" seem to have, but at this point it's far from essential.

Damn, dude, you need to set your priorities. The computer is just a tool that is going to be effectively worthless in 3-4 years. I hope that this maybe was written as satire; but that's not how it reads. My tibook has many chips and dings, but it is well used.

To keep my 17-inch PowerBook screen from getting soiled, I use Wildeepz (Transparent Silicone Display Cushion Upgrades, $15.95 + shipping) (see http://www.radtech.us/wildeepz.html ) and Laptop ScreensavRz (Display Protection, Cleaning
and Refinishing Cloth, $17.95 + shipping) (see http://www.radtech.us/screensavrz-laptop.html ), both from RadTech (see http://www.radtech.us/ ).
A good tool to use if fingerprints do happen to get on the screen is, reportedly, iKleen disposable towlettes, sold at The Apple Store (at least here in New York City, at SoHo) (unfortunately, they don't seem to be listed at The Apple Store Online ( http://store.apple.com/ )). I recently bought a pack of the wet-and-dry disposable pair variety, but haven't used any towlettes yet. They come in at least two varieties:
* a set of wet-and-dry disposable pairs, for about $9.99 + tax, or
* a combination set of those plus dry-only disposable towlettes and a spray cleaner dispenser, for about $24.99 + tax.

My apologies; the disposable towlette name was iKlear Apple Polish Kit, not iKleen. In fact, I just found them at The Apple Store Online.
You can also find various varieties of iKlear at iKlear's Web site.

No marks on my screen after two months. And I have in no way been dilligent about cleaning the screen and keyboard. I am getting a cover though because, as someone else said, it could be possible for the keyboard to bump the screen during travel and such. Better safe than sorry.
