(this topic is also in the PowerBook-section)

I am goint to get an Apple laptop very soon. I am switching from PC.
The computer should be used mainly for surfing the web (cable-internet), writing emails, watching movies, playing music (MP3) and writing (i'm a student). Maybe i want to paly a little with Photoshop og Audio Logic, but mainly it should be used for the other stuff

I have narrowed it down to two differint choises:

1. option:

PowerBook Titanium (used, from 2001)
G4 processor @ 400 Mhz
768 RAM
30 GB harddisk
15,2" 16:9 screen (!)
Airport card
1 year Applecare
8xDVD
Price: $1431 / €1212

2. option
iBook (brand new)
G3 processor @ 800 Mhz
128 RAM
30 GB harddisk
12,1" screen
CD-ROM
Price: $1430 / €1210

I like the DVD, airport card, the G4 and the big screen in the PowerBook, but is the Mhz to low? I am goint to run OS X (ofcourse)
The iBook is small and handy, but it is a G3, and the screen is tiny. Also it has only got 128 RAM, but they can be upgrated sometine in the future.

Which one should i pick?

I'd rather have the iBook, personally. With more RAM, of course.

The iBook will smoke that 400 mhz G4 in almost every category except for burning DVDs (which is something you won't be able to do with the Powerbook configured as it is anyway).

If I were you I'd upgrade the iBook to a combo drive and buy some 3rd party ram to boost the memory to 640 megs if possible (or heck...even 256).

RAM is really cheap, so don't let that sway your decision too much.
That said, I'd go for the iBook. It's just a faster and more up-to-date system. Besides, the 400 Mhz PBG4's had some kinks in the hardware design that had to be worked out with later revisions (super-flexing cases, faulty disc loading/ejecting, etc).
If you can, get a Combo Drive iBook and really make it worth your while.

like everyone else, i would too go for the ibook. i just think the 400mhz will be outdated a lot quicker than the 800 of the ibook. yes it is a g3, but i have the 800 ibook and it is so very fast.

add some more ram in there and you will love it. you can get 512mb of ibook ram for around $80

iBook, EASY.

The PPC750fx in the iBooks will kill the 400 G4 mercilessly.

The new iBook will be under warranty - and you'll be able to buy applecare. That's the clincher for me.
bb iBook 300MHz / OS 9.2.2 / OS 10.2.2 / 544MB / 40GB
iceBook 700MHz / OS 10.2.2 / 368MB / 20GB
