I am a newbie with macs and was wondering what kind of maintenance I needed to do with my powerbook - along the lines of defrag and cleaning up orphaned files, or is it all taken care of?

Repair permissions with disk utility once a month--other than that, nothing is essential.

Also, if you don't leave your book on all the time (not sleeping) you may want to take care of your periodic UNIX tasks...I recommend Cocktail, which can also repair the permissions for you. It's free--get it at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
