I've been searching the web for region free firmware for te superdrives in 17" PBs, but seems like there is none. I've read that the firmware patches are only available in OS9, and since tehre is no bootable OS9 for the 17" PBs, no firmware patch, no region free.

Is there any solution to this?
Being able to change the region 5 times is hardly enough!

There are plenty of posts on this topic on the forums. To make the drive multi-region,someone must hack the firmware in the drive. As I understand it, this is not easy. it will also void your warranty. There is also a testing period for any new software/firmware and not many people want to be first in line to test something that could severely screw up their machine.

Perhaps when more of the new machines go past their 1 year warranty, we might see further progress.

I agree 5 changes is not enough, but there's not much we can do about it until a hack is available.

Rest assured, when one does get created, it will be all over this forum, as almost all of us want it. I don't like it but I'm content to wait.

There is an UJ-815 firmware updater posted for OS X. DO NOT INSTALL IT, as it is the firmware for the 12" PB and it is NOT region free. It works fine but you lose DVD-RW burning support, and CD-R burning is 8X not 16X.

It seems several people with the 17" didn't bother reading the note with it and installed it anyway.
