I recently purchased a new 12" PB and I am probably going to add AppleCare but I would also like to have protection against acidental damage etc. Is there a specific company anyone would recommend for computer insurance? I have looked at a couple sites but I have no idea what I should be looking for when considering my options. Thanks!

Most homeowners/renters insurance in the United States covers personal property. I am unaware of any company that would just insure a computer.
It I want your opinion, I'll beat it out of you.

I called Daiwa Insurance Marketing, Inc. ( http://www.daiwainsurance.com/daiwa/index.asp ), a Japanese insurance company, to ask about anti-theft insurance, but they were only able to offer it here in New York State in a combination deal with car and comprehensive apartment rental (I think that this was the second one) insurance.

They said that the terms varied from state to state, but that because laptop theft was relatively rampant in New York, the terms here could be stricter.

Not true. I called my Insurance Agent (State Farm), and he said that they'd be more to happy to issue a personal property policy to insure our laptops. He also said that any damage to laptops done outside the home would not necessarily be covered under my homeowner's policy, although he may have just been saying that to make the additional sale. Besides, I'm most worried about either laptop getting stolen or broken while going through Airport Security, which is definitely outside the home. And our insurance only covers a certain amount in computer equipment, so if we wanted to fully insure everything we'd have to pay more to increase the limit anyway.

In any case, it only cost $35/yr to insure both our laptops, which I figured was a decent deal. And we can transfer the coverage to any new unit we might be replacing an old laptop with. I still have yet to see the fine print on the policy, though, so I'll reserve judgement on how good a deal it really is.

We had already purchased AppleCare for my wife's TiBook, since she uses it for work and will likely keep the computer for the whole three years (and I'm paranoid about the battery dying). And I consider this type of policy to be a good complement to AppleCare -- AppleCare doesn't cover theft and accidents, while the personal insurance policy doesn't cover manufacturing defects.

I know this has been covered in the past. To get a full understanding you may want to search through past topics to see if you can find even more answers. I talked to my agent and he said he would get back to me on it. That was two weeks ago

Not to be nit-picky, but could you possibly elaborate? I am seriously comparing vendors for theft insurance.

$9 per year as an addition to my homeowners insurance with Farmers insurance. covers me for any loss, damage, breakage etc anywhere in the world on business or pleasure.

no exceptions, just a $100 deductible, which on a $3000 laptop is pretty good. At less than $1 per month it would be stupid not to.

Along with buying the laptop on my credit card which doubles my manufacturers warranty from 1 year to 2 years, I see no reason to pay for applecare.
