There are a bunch of threads on this, do a search and you'll find them.

Here's two sites:

http://norum.homeunix.net/~carl/mods/

http://uk.geocities.com/ibookupgrade/

I just did this myself, and be forewarned, it is doable, but be VERY careful. It took me about two and a half hours to do the whole thing.

Also, be very careful with the keyboard connector, because I wasn't careful enough.

I also just did this on my iBook 600...A few more tips:

-It's tough to use needle-nose pliers to remove the black/red speaker wires from the main board. (These instructions will all make sense once you read the online instructions.) I pulled the wires out of the connector itself, so be very careful.

-It is very tough to remove the bottom white cover. Altho it's a durable computer, the lucite will get really messed up if you try to pry it apart with a screwdriver. Try maybe a credit card (an old one that won't be a problem if it breaks).

-It can't be said enough to keep track of the screws. I used double-sided tape on the "screw template" sheet to keep track of them.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes! (On a sidenote, to anyone looking to replace a hard drive, I've bought a few from www.newegg.com, and have been very satisfied with them. Great prices, oftentimes free FedEx shipping, overall a great site. I'm not affiliated with them.)

I did the job for my 600 when the original drive died on me (I dropped it when on, argh)
Its a good idea to print out the pictures and tape the screws to them using double sided tape.

i have the same ibook model, i would do this but

1) i got nerve dmaage in my hands, therefore..no go
2) i don't really trust anyone else to work on my ibook besides an authorized speciaist

are the any computer shops or compusas that put one in for a sum of money? all my experiences with compusa have been pleasant, so i don't have no reason not to trust them?

Try MCE Technologies. They have some of the best service for PowerBooks and have pre-packaged HDD upgrade options (i.e. one price for drive + shipping two ways + installation). They even give you a discount for trading in your old drive.

If you're close to NYC, Tekserve offer excellent PowerBook service as well.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Yesterday I also damaged my hd while jugling with my ibook (...): I even can't boot the machine from a bootable mac osx cd any more. Would this be typical behaviour after the death of a hd or could something else be going on? Haven't really decided upon whether I'll do it myself or if I will shell out the EUR 80 for the repair shop. My hands are quite shaky you know...

blackbrid: If you don't want to send off your iBook, I guess you'll have to ask your local stores. I only know that the Geniuses at the retail Apple Store will not install new drives in iBooks, but instead refer you to an Apple Specialist. Give CompUSA a call and ask. But I doubt they'll be willing to do it.
