I still have time to purchase this but wanted to know if it is a must to get AppleCare. At $280+ it's a bit much . . . or is it?

There have been about three thousand threads along these lines. Just do a simple search for "apple care buy" or something similar. Jeez.

Well, think the general consensus is that if you buy a notebook computer you should probably get the Applecare. I bought it with my 466 iBook and have used it, and I still have until Oct. on it. They not only fix what is broke, but also things that are out of spec. For instance when I sent mine in it was for a loud HD, now it still worked fine, but it was really annoying. If I had to pay out of pocket I might not have had it fixed. Plus there is peace of mind, which I think has value. Notebooks tend to push the technology envelope so things can fail unexpectedly, also there is the fact that if something does break it's going to take a bit to pull the machine apart and reassemble, man hours. Notebook repair can get pricey.
I also see you're a newbie, so the poster below you was just saying that if you had done a search on the forum you would have found the answer. There is a link to do a search on the upper part of the page. I apologize for the poster, he should have looked at your status. Good luck with it.

I echo slider. As a habit, I usually purchase AppleCare (even for desktops)--perhaps wasteful, but it gives me peace of mind.
Welcome to the forums, btw.

I am newbie to the Mac world and too eager about everything. I should have searched around first and could have avoided the rude remarks from someone who had the spare time to flame me.
Thanks for your input and I will now buy AppleCare! It's currently on sale on MacWarehouse --- $199 : )

Basically if you have the money for Applecare now, get it. You don't know if you will have the money to fix the repair when something breaks down.
I purchased Applecare for my iMac and darned if two weeks after it would have run out my computer crapples out. Applecare is a godsend.

You can do a google search for smalldog and check their prices, too. They had the lowest price when I purchased AC.
And don't worry about not doing a search, some people get touchy for no reason. Enjoy your Mac.

Hello,
Welcome to the Mac platform. I've been here just over a year and I like it. In fact, I insist on not using a PC at work.
AppleCare is a great investment. My cat was freaking out one day and knocked my iBook off the table, which resulted in a broken latch.
It was fixed and all is good now!

But it probably shouldn't have been fixed; you got lucky. AppleCare doesn't cover damage resulting from an accident (you drop it, you spill coke on the keyboard, you poke the LCD with a pointed stick). AC only covers manufacturing defects.
So while it is great to have, and can save you money in the long run, it won't cover everything.

Hello,
Nobody asked how it happened. I just appeared with the problem and they fixed it. For me, they may have let it go because there was also a problem with the right speaker, which was not caused by the incident.
You are correct about the AppleCare Plan. In fact,
"The Plan does not cover:
...b Damage due to accidents, abuse, neglect, misuse...
g Repair, replacement, or maintenance of items that have been subject to wear and tear, such as cases, key caps, knobs, handles, batteries or mechanical parts..."
I have read many times on this forum regarding the perception that AppleCare covers 'normal wear and tear.' I guess this is a misconception, indeed.

No, do worry. You will get a lot better response if you do your homework rather than being a lazy ****tard and posting something that has been covered time after time after time.

Hello,
Yes, but if the repeated questions never came up, this forum would be just about empty and you'd have nothing to read all day.

Hey, I just posted this in another thread, but it might have been better to put it over here...
If you want to play safe, it is a "Good Thing(tm: mod. Steve)", but don't forget that after your 1-year limited warranty has expired, this does NOT mean that every single failure of your machine has to be repaired at the owner's cost! As a consumer you also have rights that are based on reasonability. An LCD should not die after one and a half year under normal use. If it does, you should negotiate with the selling party (Apple Store or another resaler) about the cost of repair and you'll very likely to save a lot of money. The seller sold you a product that was mend to last longer than one and a half year under normal circumstances. No matter what the hardware vendor's warranty-policy is. Bear in mind: even the Apple Store, with its quite rigid policy, will be susceptible of your arguments provided these are reasonable. This, I found out for myself when my iBook's battery died after 15 months: at first, they wanted me to buy a new one (and you know what these thingies cost...). After letting them know that I was aware of consumer rights and 'reasonability' they put me through to the consumer service dept. and it didn't take us long to agree upon them sending me a replacement battery and me paying only for it's shipping (this was even better than I actually expected).
In short: a one year limited warranty legally does not mean as much as you might think (regarding the seller-consumer relationship). Claim your rights and be firm. You'll be fine and it can save you a lot of money (results may vary in different countries ).

Picking up the ball w/ tikki's theme...
There is only 90 phone support w/ a brand new mac. Applecare extends that to the length of the applecare warranty. That means one can call and ask any-old-stupid-questions about apple software and not get charged the $49 call-in fee.
BTW tikki - if you want to discourage "this sort of thing" why did you respond?

That's true, but you could also post "any-old-stupid-questions" over here. There's only a small chance that you would be named a "lazy bastard" or whatsoever, but you'll get over that.

I agree. If these guys are so bothered by us trying to help someone out they could have just skipped this thread and everyone would have been happier. Why come into a thread just to nag?
There are always going to be people who are new to macs or maybe just not very knowledgeable about technology and they'll have questions. Isn't that what mac forums are about, helping other mac users?
When another mac user needs help, I'll help, if I can. That's what makes the mac community great.
IMO, the guy who asked to original question deserved an answer. It's the complainers who are out of line, and who added nothing but negative energy to the thread.
