I bought a 550 back in November 2001 and since then I've had to have the motherboard replaced 4 times. The symptoms are always the same: random freezes, then within an hour, no boot chime or boot chime followed by 3 beeps, then refusal to start up. I have AppleCare and they have replaced the motherboard each time and have said they have no record of anything wrong with the 550. I tend to believe them since I'm sure I would have heard about other 550 owners with the same problem, so my question is what could be causing this almost clockwork like self destruction?
I have added a 512MB module in the upper slot, but I've been using that since I got the machine and it makes no difference if I take it out once the symptoms have started. I've had the Airport card die once and replaced. Lastly I use a Firewire drive regularly (although the problem has never started while the drive was connected) and a Microsoft wireless Explorer mouse.
Any thoughts as to why this happens would be appreciated.
