Hi

Just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem.. A few mornings ago I woke up to a horrible sound emanating from my 12" Powerbook - I had left it on all night (as usual). Screen was blank and a grinding noise was coming from the left hand side of the trackpad. I am assuming it is the hard drive which is on the left side of the trackpad?

Turned it off and tried to reboot.. everything seemed really really slow, white apple screen came on eventually, after one hour it was still on the same screen and noises still coming from the HDD. Started to panic, because I hadnt backed up any data so far.. tsk tsk. So I turned it off and let it cool down for half and hour. Hurrah!! It booted up fine after that, with no strange noises. Managed to get back into OSX, and back up data.. phew! Later that day 7-8hrs later, same thing happened. Noise started, screen froze. Left it off for 1/2 hr, worked fine again.

Called apple support and they said to send it in for repair. The nice Irish lady on the line said that the techs would not copy my data from the old HDD to the new one!! Is this normal? So now i have to wait until I can afford to buy a Firewire drive to back everything up onto before sending it in for repair.

After reading the thread about horror apple support stories, I'm not sure about sending it in! Comments anyone?

Apple has a charge you can pay if you want to preserve your data. Otherwise, you'll just get a new hard drive. Sorry - it really isn't much different for any other company out there.
