I've got a Ti 500 that I've had since launch - a few years now. The machine stays on most of the time and the HD has started to make a funny noise. Damn. Time to replace it I would imagine.
Rather than reinstalling everything, what's the best way to replace the hard drive? Can I simply get a new drive, slap it in a FW enclosure and copy everything over and then put the new drive in the machine?
It's a 20 gig drive now - any issue if I slap a 60 in it?
Comments/suggestions appreciated.
thanks - danbrew

Yes, you can do as you suggest--use Carbon Copy Cloner to make the transfer. Repair permissions after it is installed, just in case.
Any normal notebook drive (below 12.5 mm) will fit your laptop--get one with lots of room and cache and have at it!

Your plan is a good one. Best to do it sooner than later.

Yep, I've done it and as mentioned, Carbon Copy Cloner is the way to go. A Firewire enclosure can be had for about $50 and you'll have a cool backup drive after the exchange, if the old drive doesn't quit on you.
I just got the IBM/Hitachi Travelstar 80GB for my Ti. Nice quiet drive!

Hey thanks for the link. Finally, the 17" service manual is found!
