hello all! maybe i missed it in the threads (sorry if this case) but i am wondering if i could get some help and opinions pls. . .thanks!
my father-in-law has offered to buy/chip-in my wife and i a laptop in order for us to categorize lots of old family photos and he will take into consideration what we have to say on the matter. as much as i would love to get the 17"er i don't think i can quite pull that one off. so, for those of you with experience. . .is there a major difference in the 12" and 15" for using iphoto/imovie/idvd for catalogue-ing (sorry for misspell) and compiling onto cd/dvd photos? i know that the l3 cache plays into it somewhat, but how noticeable is it and is it really that important for someone without a time crunch? also would you think the superdrive is better or the combo-just because i am not sure which is more cost-effective for making copies of large iphoto albums (not sure how many, but expect several hundred MB in the end of it all, if not pushing GB. . .)? i personally think i may be leaning toward the 15" w/ superdrive, but a 12" wld be nice too.
thanks!!
nick
ps we will also be able to keep it for our school work, as we are both still in college, if that makes any kind of difference.

for the price difference of the 12 and 15 you can buy yourself a nice big 22" CRT screen (which has very good colors)... you can then have
(a) a very modern, fast enough, ultraportable mac
(b) a nice big screen @ 1600x1200 for photo editing
(c) good price
just my $0.02

I do what you want to do on my 17" and it is great, however, the 17" has better screen resolution. I think the 15" will work just fine. The 12" is too small for photo work IMO so if you go that route, I would go with a separate monitor as the above poster mentioned. I think the 22" is big bucks, though.
After you load lots of photos you will want to also take advantage of making slide shows and movies with them so the superdrive is a good thing to have so you can put them on DVD.
I would also wait for the new 15", which should make it's debut shortly. But then, you can get a pretty sweet deal on 15" Tibooks these days.

but are those just rumored 15"ers or has that been found to be truly something we can expect relatively soon?

Rumored... but suspected HIGHLY due to the length of time since the last update.
You can pretty much bet the farm it'll be a slight (1.25-1.3Ghz maybe) speed bump w/ an aluminum enclosure and AE/Bluetooth. If you don't need AE and Bluetooth, the previous poster was right... you can get ridiculous deals on the 15" these days.
