The very best way to sell your iBook is to know somone that wants it and sell it face to face.

But since that's not always possible, I'd list it in the forum here on MacNN and on Ebay. Ebay's also a good place to find out how much to expect you'll get for yours. Just check out some recently completed auctions for a ballpark figure.

I would have to agree. If you happen to live in one of the cities covered by craigslist.org, I would recommend posting an ad there. I sold a couple of Powerbooks that way and received an above average price. From the point of view of the buyer, it's worth the extra bucks to see the item in hand than worry about receiving a box filled with bricks, or worse yet, a Dell.

The one and only time I received a Dell, inspiron 8100 laptop, it might as well had been a brick. W/in 10 minutes of unwrapping it I was on the phone w/ Dell. The guy said "you need a new screen, a new motherboard, and a complete reinstall of all the software." I just *insisted* on a return for full refund. It may have helped that my son's friends' father is an exec at Dell. I've had problems w/ Macs but this was ridiculous; I felt like the guy being sold a dead parrot in that Monty Python skit.

Vouch for the craigslist.org and buying in person.

I just bought my first iBook off of craigslist.org in NYC. 600mhz/20gig/combo w/airport for $400. Had to fix the latch and the hard drive had the loudest whine to it (worked, but something was loose, deaths sounds I imagine). Took it apart myself and replaced the bottom catch part of the latch, which meant I had to buy the entire top plate. But at least I got new speakers, trackpad and clicker at Tekserve (though they said they normally don't sell them outright. I think he thought it was funny to see me walk in with just the toplate asking"I just bought this used, the latch is broken". I think he thought that I was broken also..... Cost $140. Hitachi 20gig drive cost $150 at Datavision. All in all, new iBook with new topplate and harddrive for $700. That was the way to go. Plus everyone that I talked to craigslist was great.

BTW, if you sell on eBay, specify what city you are in and let people know that if they are in the area and are the highest bidder, that they can stop by and check out the machine and pay cash. I only search on eBay in NYC with sellers that agree to this. Too many scam scares for expensive items like this these days. Sigh.
