Has anyone tried the Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 80GN?

Does anyone have any experience with the new Hitachi/IBM Travelstar 80GN? Is it significantly louder than the Fujitsus which came with some Ti-Books and which were praised for their quietness; is it noticeably slower than the IBM 40 GNX which I think Sean Perez said was the fastest PB drive available? Thanks for any info.

Frankly just 20 Gig more than what I have just doesn't move me these days. I opted for the 120 Gig exterior 800 firewire drive with 8 MB RAM from transintl.com instead. Works with video perfectly; not one glitch and no slowed framerates compared with the internal drive.

I just got the 80GB 80GN. It's really quiet. I have to listen very closely to even hear it at all. I don't know how it compares to the Fujitsus you mentioned but I can't imagine a drive being any quieter.

The Fujitsu 60 GB in my TiBook is very quiet. The external Toshiba 60 GB Cutie drive I have is also very quiet, but I give the edge to the Fujitsu. And my iPod is pretty damn quiet too. 135 GB total of portable hard disk goodness.

it is very quiet, very fast and has the best current capacity...it's a no-brainer.
I would say that the Fujitsu is a hair quieter, but it doesn't make a difference at that level.

Your 100% correct. The Fujitsu was the quietest drive I never heard, the 80GB Hitachi is second quietest (but only by a very thin hair)

I have one in my PB and I'm very happy with it.
Very fast, and very quiet. The 80GN is the fastest drive you can buy for a notebook, despite it's slower spindle speed. Great drive.

transintl.com is WAY to expensive. You can buy the 80GN at www.googlegear.com for $256.00. A $23 savings and googlegear ships 2nd day air for only 50 cents. You can't beat their prices.

I upgraded because I love being able to put the Fujitsu in a FW case that is bus powered. For me, the more I can run w/o cords the further I get.

Thanks for all of the feedback, especially regarding the price points. I think I'll go with the 80GN.

Definitely 80GN. It's worth the adventure in opening up your PowerBook. Mine actually seems faster with it - plus it's a lot cooler! =)
