I am going to be traveling to Ireland in the next 2 weeks as this will be my first time overseas and on a plane at all.

1. I have been looking at getting a airplane adapter so that I can use the 12" on a plane. Do most planes have the "laptop" plug in them? Also can anybody point me in the direction of a good one to use on the plane? I found one at the Apple store, but it was $70 and I would like to try and get a little lower than that if possible.

2. Can I use any plug adapter to make my US plug work with the European plugs? I know that the Apple Store sells the pack of universal adapters, but $40 seems like alot to only use one adapter. I just want to make sure that it is not going to harm my baby in any way;-).

Thanks in advance to anybody that can help me out on this.

Call your Airline and find out what adaptor you need. It differs widely from carrier to carrier. Also, if you're flying economy (like I do 99% of the time, sigh) you're out of luck. AFAIK there is no transatlantic carrier offering power in cattle class.

Your power adaptor is auto currency sensing so yes, any cheap old plug adaptor will do. You don't need a stepdown ar anything like that.

I think United and American use the emPower adapters. You can get one for 40 bucks from SmartDisk (www.smartdisk.com)

and as for the power, yeah, it can take any voltage from 100v to 240v, so just use a converter, or if you're really desperate, bend the little plug thingies so they fit (kidding, of course)

Do you really have to work all the time in cattle/coach/economy class?

Make sure your Apple battery is fully charged; work for as long as it can andthen go and enjoy yourself a bit in the plane. You know: there are other things to live than working wit hyour computer 24/7

I'm going to Amsterdam next week myself, and am hoping that I can do a lot on my computer. A 7 hour plane ride to the largest amusement park on earth can be quite boring. :-D I hope my friends and I will be able to create a rendezvous network using wireless and be able to communicate on the plane, since we are not sitting next to each other. As for the adapters, I saw the Apple ones and did not buy them, then went to CompUSA and bought the London Fog travel adapters for $8 bucks :-D.

Don't use Airport on the airplane--that's a no-no.

Not so fast. A friend of mine travelled from the US to Europe a few weeks ago and apparently KLM are trialling wireless 802.11 networks for Economy class, with first and business having standard ethernet connections. All this designed to give Internet access. I can't confirm this at klm.com.

As for power access, I have only ever had this in the posh seats (i.e. business class), sometimes with a big clunky adaptor (supplied by the airline on the plane) and once I flew Lufthansa from Germany to Japan and their seats took standard continental and US plugs.

Don't forget that the plugs used in Ireland (and the UK) are different to those in the rest of Europe.

WiFi on planes should be fine. Lufthansa is trialing WiFi internet access on their Frankfurt - Washington route. So is KLM, as mentioned above.
