Hey list,

I'm running 10.2.6 on a gigabook and would like to know how to keep the powerbook from sleeping when I close the latch (and inversely, waking up when I open the book). I remember seeing a setting, but I can't seem to find it.

This seems like a rtfm question, but I can't seem to find my manual either

Thanks!

Why do you want to do this? If you want to run in closed lid mode, attach an external monitor, mouse, and keyboard, close the lid, then hit a key on the keyboard. The machine will not turn on the internal LCD. This should be in your manual.

will this work with a tv connected through s-video port instead of an external monitor ? (good for games)

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I should have been more clear when asking my question. I want to put the powerbook to sleep manually, rather than having the powerbook sleep automatically when I close the lid.

I don't want to have the powerbook on with the lid closed. I just want to be able to manually tell the powerbook to go to sleep before closing the lid.

In other words, I don't want anything to happen when the powerbook screen closes (I'll put it to sleep manually).

Thanks,

Wynn

Just go to the Apple menu, select Sleep, and you're done. Then you can close the lid if you wish.

Hi Macola,

Thanks for the reply, but I still don't think I'm asking the question correctly. I know how to put the powerbook to sleep (either by going to the apple menu, or by pushing the power button) - but that's not my question.

I want to be able to keep the powerbook from sleeping and waking whenever the lid closes and opens. In OS 9, that was possible, but I can't find the setting in X.

i'm almost certain there's no such setting in OS X. however , i can think of only 2 reasons why you'd want that , and both seem to have other solutions.
1. u want to avoid waiting for your to fall a sleep/wake up. - that's unnecessary under X since sleeping/waking is practically instant.
2. u want to be able to control your computer while the lid is down. - this is covered in ibook_steve's reply. connect an external monitor and a mouse or a keyboard (i think one of them is enough ), and your computer will wake.

if u have a different reason , please share it , maybe there's another solution for it as well.

.... actually there's one more reason i can think of: closing the lid and staying online.

i'm really not sure about this one...

anyone ?

does exactly what you need. i use it when i use my powerbook as a jukebox for parties, and control itunes with a usb remote control. use at your own risk, as the software involves recompiling the kernel (it does it automatically for you).
