So, can anyone tell me how the video quality using a 17" external LCD differs with a PBG4 12" from the DVI output on a PBG4 15" (or 17")? What visual difference does the VGA out vs. DVI out make in practice? How do VGA ouput to an LCD panel and DVI output differ, seen side by side?
Thanks

Try a search on that subject, it has been discussed several times. You should find your answer. Personally I run a 15" Sony off my 12" PB and am very happy with the quality.

Actually, no one has written a comparison. Some like you have said they are happy with the vga output to an lcd, but no one has reported on vga vs. dvi from a personal point of view. Thanks

My 17" Sony LCD SDM-X72 has both VGA and DVI hook-ups, and with a PC and a NVIDIA GeForce4 4200 video card, I couldn't tell the difference between a VGA or a DVI connection. I don't have a 15" or 17" PB to compare against, but I do hook my 12" PB to it quite regularly using the VGA adapter, and it looks great at 1280x1024, virtually no difference than with my old PC and a DVI connection. I would say that the biggest difference between the PB's display and the monitor is the monitor is much brighter, but that is to be expected.

Just tried the Sony LCD with a Powerbook Pismo (bronze keyboard) and the VGA output looked as crisp as the DVI from my TiBook.
So why is DVI so touted and VGA damned?

Because with DVI, you can hook up an Apple Cinema Display via a $100 DVI-to-ADC adapter. OTOH with VGA, you can't connect to an Apple LCD unless you buy a $300 VGA-to-ADC conversion box from Gefen.
Bottom line:
DVI: Apple LCD OK
VGA: only 3rd party LCDs

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.
