I cant connect to any 400 devices. In the system info it lists the firewire connection as "firewire 0" what does this mean? Any ideas, hints, etc? Do these cables go bad?

Have you tried the hardware test with your firewire device connected?
Put the system DVD that came with your computer in the powerbook and restart. Hold down option during reboot and you will be able to select the Hardware test partition on the DVD.
