Looks as though they will be coming within the next two weeks -- next Mon. or Tues. or at MW Creative Pro -- given these factors:

1.) Several reports of current orders delayed - until around 7/7 or 7/8
2.) Shipping status for GHz PowerBook SuperDrive model is 7-10 days at Apple online store
3.) 15-inch Titantiums are nearing 8 months without an upgrade; 12- and 17-inch models are just about 6 months old
4.) Digitimes reported new 15.4 inch PowerBook will go into production in 2nd half of 2003; we're now in 2nd half of 2003
5.) 15-inch lack faster mobo, Airport Extreme and Built in bluetooth other models possess
6.) Motorola 7457 may be available earlier than expected and may be used in the new PB mode

Hmm...I wouldn't take it as a definite sign just yet.

A few weeks back the 15" TiBooks batteries suddenly changed to a dramtically long wait time, yet no new PBs surfaced.

I was in an Apple re-seller on Monday (only time I've ever been in one) -- they had a 12" and 17" but no 15". They said they've been waiting for an announcement on the new 15s, but they've been waiting for a couple months.

Thanks for the welcome! Actually, the reseller was MacHeads in Lancaster, PA. I had to drive 2.5 hours to see Macs (for the first time). I'm a PC user seriously considering a switch. I'm interested in the 15" PB. Fortunately, I have a *little* bit of time, as I'm looking to purchase by the end of the year.

I would think that the 15" Powerbooks will break cover at or around Create/Macworld/CreatePro (or whatever it is called these days!)...

However if you can, wait as long as you are able to before you buy, to be sure you get the best deal for yourself... For example, this year it would sting to buy a Mac in the next few months, and then have to pay £100 for 10.3 in a further few months down the line, when you could have waited and has it as the installed OS...

However, whatever you choose, good luck with the purchase...I'm sure you'll enjoy whichever mac you buy!

Peace,

Marc

The 12- and 15-inch PowerBooks at smalldog have shown as "Available (7-10 days)" for a month now. This is getting ridiculous. I hope whatever Apple unveils is available immediately.

That is still speculation; Apple has not announced anything about 10.3 upgrades and the G5.

I would guess that when Apple announces a shipping date for 10.3, they will let anyone purchasing a Mac after the announcement to upgrade for $20.

If you remember how the French retailer FNAC said that PowerMac G4s were becoming unavailable in advance of the WWDC keynote, check out their Mac portables section ("Micro & Telecom" on the top, then "Ordinateurs portables" -> "Apple"). As of this morning only the iBooks and the 17" PowerBook are available within 24 hours. The 12" and 15" are available "within 4-9 days." It should also be noted that the 15" 867 MHz model isn't even listed there, though I haven't frequented the site enough to say if it was there in the recent past.

So this is extra evidence that the PowerBook line may be updated very soon, though not necessarily tomorrow. I know that the online Apple store is still only giving unusual delays on the 15" Superdrive model.

There might still be a lot of 867MHz models in the pipeline. When the line changed from 667/800 to 867/1000, there were 667Mhz models available at the resellers for MONTHS. In fact smalldog had a supply of them, new in carton, as late as May!

It's also possible, as others have speculated, that Apple will keep the 867 as a System 9-boot model for a while.

But aren't these supply figures just based on the amount of risk resellers are willing to take? It's not like Apple tells them in advance what's going to be changed. If I am not wrong, some resellers are not bringing in new stock of the powerbook because they no longer have price protection or something, so they can't just return the stock. I think the true indication (if at all) would be Apple's own online store figures.

That's a fair point, I never really thought about the 15" 867 being kept for OS 9 holdouts until its stock clears. It's basically the portable equivalent of the 1.25 GHz PowerMac from this year (i.e. the neglected model that sits around in the warehouse).

Maybe Apple will just have a generic "OS 9 systems" link on the store that directs you to the leftover PowerMacs and PowerBooks.

All I know for sure is that people like me (who own a 15" 867) are an endangered species. Ah well, maybe I'll join the herd with my next PowerBook.

I wouldn't put much faith in FNAC listings at this point. They had also listed several of the PowerBooks as "unavailable" or "discontinued" shortly before WWDC. OTOH, maybe they were just a bit too early, and we will indeed get new PowerBooks on July 7/8 or at MWCPNY the week after.

I'm ready to get a Rev.B 12-inch PowerBook.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

escher:

All the G4 towers were listed as "indisponible" (unavailable) shortly before the expo, though, which is why I'm suspicious.

When I bought my ghz Tibook back at the end of March, it had a 7-10 day shipping estimate. I wouldn't think too much of this....

I may be mistaken, don't you have the current 12" Al Book? Or was that an iBook?
Happy owner of a new 15" Al PB.
