Hi !
I have a strange new problem with the internal modem of my 3 month old 12" PB:
it worked out very well the last month but now when i try to connect my provider i get a line signal and I hear the modem dial but the line signal wont't disappear (so i guess the modem only makes some kind of fake trail connection sound ??)
The cables etc. are all fine i tested it with a 700iBook and everything was fine...
Has anyone sim. problems ?
Much thanks, n.p.

I would do a few things...
In the modem setup panel, check the option for the modem to only dial 'if it detects a dial tone'...
This way you can see if the modem is actually detecting the line and dialing, or, as sounds more likely, if only you can hear the line tone, and the modem is 'falsely' attempting to connect...
If you have no luck, try trashing the preferences, trying a different modem 'type', and try using a different phone line/cable...
If still no luck, I would give Apple a call...
Good luck,
Marc

My PB 17 modem hardware failed at about 3 months.
I ended up doing an OSX archive and install to show that software was not the issue.

I don't understand my PB anymore
the apple techs tested it..and guess, everything was fine. My 12" PB back from the netherlands and nothing has changed: everything (cables, configs, etc.) work out 100% nice with my iBook but the PB failes with same configs etc.

Is the proper city set in your Date & Time Location Preference Panel? This will cause the Modem to load the proper location script. Also , try choosing another Modem Script like Apple Modem V.90 or V.34. I recommend trying to get it to dial without detecting a dial tone add a comma in the beginning of your ISP Phone Number so it will pause a few seconds before dialing the number. This gives the modem time to open the line before manually dialling

I had a friend who had a similar problem with Juno. Somewhere in the Network Preferences, there is an area to choose what order to use the network interfaces in. Make sure that the modem is above Bluetooth. It was always trying to use the Bluetooth modem to dial instead of the regular modem.
