For the second year i'm having trouble using a dial-up connection in Europe with my iBook (dual usb and os X jaguar). I can connect but the line drops after 2 minutes. No problem using the modem in US.
I have to use an old iBook with OS 9 to connect to the internet.
the console log says that dns_send_query_server - Send failed for ..IP number
any suggestion?
Thanks

I don't know about last year at this time, but dial-up modem problems are a known OS X issue. Things to try include changing the modem "type" under System Preferences (which has worked somewhat for me) or to turn off error correction, also under System Preferences. The latter will slow your already pokey dial-up connection to a crawl, but add stability.

Jobs,
should include dial-up connectivity as a new feature in the next version of os X.
I tried to modify all the settings on the sys admin panel and the results are less than impressive. I have to restart the laptop every time I change the settings because the modem will not work (keep dialing with the remote number).
Thxs,

That is bizarre. I use dial up all the time when travelling (12" PB) with none of the problems you describe.
What ISP are you using? I can recommend Tiscali which in my experience is fast, reliable and available throughout Europe.
Try http://www.tiscali.co.uk for an account. If that doesn't work because your PB conks out IM me and I can set an account up for you and mail you the details.
Best of luck.

I tried 3 different ISP with the same results and one of this was tiscali. I'm using an old clamshell iBook with OS 9 and it works fine.
I can't use the dual USB iBook with os x.

i had a similar problem all the time until i upgraded to 10.2.6. had the problems with 10.2.3 and 10.2.4 - i could connect with OS9 then but under X, it would either not connect or it would be dropped within a few minutes. no problems now.
