when i change the volume on my G4 tiBook with the keyboard keys, the f5 and f4 keys, i am used to seeing the shadowy volume display in the middle of the screen and hearing the little beeps as the little white squares increased or decreased. now, when the volume changes, i see the indicator display, but it is silent. my sound seems to be ok otherwise.

i repaired permissions and fsck'd.

i suspect some sort of absurdly simple system preference has come undone, but what?

does anyone have any ideas?

Did you look under the "play feedback when volume keys are pressed" setting under the sound preferences? You can try checking and unchecking it just to make sure it sticks.

...yes, well, now i have.... duh. i swear i have the dumbest little problems.
