I'm on a Dual USB 500MHz G3 DVD iBook and my screen keeps fading in and out. It doesn't fade completely. Instead, it simply dims then seconds later regains full brightness. Any idea what's causing this and how I can make it stop? Thanks!
Let's show 'em why Macworld 2003 won't be like Macworld 2002.

Do a search in this forum - from what I've read over the past few months, it's not a good sign; better hope you have AppleCare. Mine does it too from time to time, it appears to be problems with the connector between the logic board and the display.

Assuming it is not something simple like the 'energy saver control panel' dimming the screen down after a period of inactivity, I would also say that it is not a good sign...

If you have Applecare, give them a call soon.

I hope you have Apple Care. There's a lot of information here:

I bet it's just your energy saving settings. Do you have a wireless mouse plugged in into your iBooks USB? Are the drivers installed?

Check your energy settings, and if it is still not fixed post back. (Or post back saying it worked, either way works )

Crap! No AppleCare, and I'm a few months out of warranty.

Looks like I'll have to buy a new system for college anyway.

And it's nothing with the Energy Saver control panel. That was the first thing I checked.

I have nothing plugged into it. This can't be good :x

Ouch! Sorry to hear of your predicament...

On the bright side, it may not be that expensive to fix... It will be worth getting an estimate at least. You may be surprised.

Out of interest, can you still run it with an external display? If so, you still have a system, and some resale value is salvaged...

Hope you can sort it,

Marc

(If you can't get it fixed and want to sell it on, drop me a PM as I may be interested...)

I recently had that happen on my iBook about two months ago.

I discovered it was a common problem -- apparantly, there's a wire that slowly gets crunched the more you open/close the lid, and the wire controls the screen's backlight.

My iBook wasn't officially under warranty anymore (as I added a DVD reader to it myself, I purchased it with just a CD-ROM drive), so I was worried that I would have to pay for the repair. So, I asked what the cost was.

They ended up not caring about my own little modifcation, but the price quoted to me was about $250 for the repair.
