One of the main deciding factors in my PB or iBook decision (12 inch) is battery life and heat. So, couple questions.

1. Under normal usage conditions, what's the average battery life of the 12 inch PB?

2. I've heard they get pretty hot. About how hot is it and is it unberable? I also saw it can cause warping to the metal....true or not?

Thanks

I've got the 12" PowerBook and it's a great machine...

Battery life: I generally get around 3 to 3 1/2 hours +/- depending what I'm doing, watching a DVD wears it down very quickly.

Heat: It does get warm under the left wrist, but certainly not scalding and it's not uncomfortable (to me anyway). I usually have it on a desk which allows more ventilation that if it was on my lap. I've never seen any warping on any powerbooks.

Good luck !

PowerBook 12", 867MHz, 640MB, 60GB, OS X 10.4
iMac G3, 333MHz, 288MB, 6GB, OS X 10.3
iPods: 3G iPod, 1G mini, 1G shuffle, 2G nano

I concur with the battery life. 3-4 hours if you keep the display brightness low. If you are playing a DVD, probably closer to 2 Hours.

My powerbook gets hot. If I am playing a DVD or downloading a lot (using the airport card), it gets uncomfortably warm/hot to the left of the mouse.

Now the power plug transformer is another story. It gets real hot, hot enough to burn on your skin, hot enough to get very uncomfortable through a pair of pants. Just be aware of where it is if you have small children or accidentally leave it sitting on your lap while you work on the train...not that I did that today on the way home from NY or anything.

Does it matter? No.....this is the best laptop ever made. Get it, you will have no regrets, I own both a Powebook Pismo and a 12", the pismo, while still a very usable machine, does not compare.

I have hd my minibook for 2 days now. I am averaging about 2.5-3 hours on battery, but I have it set to max performance even while on battery since I am always near a plug. I havent tried it on energy saver yet. The book by itself get a bit warm on the left wrist pad, especially when using the HD and Airport, but it os definitely NOT uncomfortable for me. When plugged in and doing the same it gets really hot, not unuseable, but also not ideal. Would I trade it or not do it again. HELL no. I love the little beast.

I've had my 12"pbsd for 11 days now. I will get 2.5 to 3 hours surfing (wirelessly) and approx 2 hours dvd. The kids were able to watch toy story 2 in its entirety.

It stays pretty cool for surfing but when watching a dvd it feels about the same heat as putting your hand on the bottom of a coffee mug (with hot coffee in it).

I find the transformer gets quite hot (like the side of the coffee mug).

Well worth it though.

yg17, there are tons of threads dealing with that question already. If you use the search filed at the top you should find all the answers you're looking for.

Personally I am getting about 3 hours on full performance with no heat problems.

hmm... i saw this in 10.2.3 or 10.2.4 but since upgrading to 10.2.6 i have had no heat problems.. sure the machine is not intended for cooling my beer but my PB 12" does not run hotter than my brother in law's iBook 800mhz...

have you upgraded to 10.2.6 ?
