I just noticed that one of the two prongs on the power adapter is broken -- the hinge part.

I have no idea why it broke. I didn't drop it, abuse it, kick it, whatsoever. I just use it to wind up the cable

Any ideas whether this is covered by the standard one year warranty? I don't have the extended AppleCare.

I could be wrong, but I think that as long as you are in your first year, you have complimentary applecare.

My experience has not been that you get complimentary AppleCare, but I am willing to bet that this falls under the warranty.
