Hey folks... Looking for some insight here... As the legend goes: I bought a first gen PBG4 500Mhz when they first came out, and was *very anxious to get my hands on it. When it arrived, I booted it up, and....... nothing! The computer hung every time I tried to start it. Never mind the embarrasment of having to send the new laptop i had been hyping to all my friends for so long in for repairs the first day... i just wanted to use my new mac! Sooooo I take it to an authorized reseller, and they send it back to Apple, and what happed was this: Ti books have two SODIMM slots, with the factory memory installed in the bottom slot when it arrives. Thing is my bottom slot is frigged and won't recognize anything. So Apple just moved my RAM to the top slot, and presto, the computer works! At the time, I was so happy to get my comp back running I didn't bother questioning what they did to fix it. Flash forward, now Im doing freelance video/imaging and I need more RAM, I buy a 512 card and stack them in there, and lo and behold.. My bottom slot might as well have a club cracker in it. So I am pissed because I sent it in to have the problem *fixed under warranty, and the problem was just side stepped, and now my comp is not fully functional, and I am hosed. Any suggestions? Has anyone else had a similar problem? Anything I can do (screwdriver and hammer?) to fix it myself?

Thanx!

C'mon, i know one of you out there knows something.... I just got my 512 mem card, plugged it in, and my computer will only start if there is ram in the top slot only... which makes me think it does see something there in the bottom slot, its just not handeling it right. What possible things can I do to make it load with both cards installed? I was hoping it would at least start up with the 512 and just ignore the 256 long enough for me to see if i could find a way to tamper with software and get it to recognize it....
Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!!

NAYR X, since you are having a hardware issue, you need to take your PowerBook to an authorized repair center to have it fixed. That is your only option, and unfortunately, since it is out of warranty, it won't be an inexpensive fix. Just make sure that next time you find out what was done and make sure the repair was done properly.

Also, just make sure that you place the new DIMM in the slot that works to make sure the new DIMM is good - I've had RAM go bad before, which will keep a system from booting, both Mac and PC, since your firmware does hardware checks before accessing your hard disk for the OS.

as "cheap?" as fixing MOBO is to buy a 1GB chip and use it instead.... it is expensive, but probably cheaper than a motherboard!

I don't think they make 1GB chips that would fit his Book--it's a Ti500.
