Okay, while the debate for a new computer continues, I'd like to know what folks here recommend as a user test for a new PB.

There's that screen test program that lets you test for dead pixels (anybody have a link handy?)

Is there a program that will let us do the traditional burn-in test so we can shake out any bugs right away? ie. run the disk drive hard for 24-48 hours, kick the tires, etc.

BTW, I KNOW they will release a new line next week cause I'm expecting our 17" AL TODAY. The last two times I bought from Apple a new system was announced/released within the month.

Don't you think that Apple does these exact type of tests before shipping a unit out of the factory? You may be reading that many people have problems on these boards, but it's only the ones who have problems that complain or ask for help. Just enjoy your new computer!

i doubt they really do these tests, but steve hits the nail on the head: ENJOY YOUR MACHINE!!! Don't go looking for something you can't find. If it's there, and you can't find it, don't go looking, because once you find it, you'll always see it.

I remember years ago receiving a Performa from the factory with a diagnostic/test cd still in the cd tray. I'd guess that's when they used to do the burn in tests.

In today's manufacturing/assembly lines my guess is the unit is assembled and the software "cloned" onto the hard drive and shipped. Bypassing the burn in test because of better manufacturing QC by vendors wouldn't surprise me.

But that doesn't protect ME, who is spending my hard earned $$ on a product that is warranted for how long again??
If there were no God, it would be necessary to invent him.

1 year, which is more than enough time for you to catch something that would have failed during a factory test.

Every computer goes through burn-in testing at Apple. If they didn't many more us would be bitching.

BTW, my 17" Powerbook had a unformatted hard drive and a test disc in it when I got it from the factory. Would have been a bummer for a newbiel...
