After a long debate with myself, many months of waiting for the new 15, I am going to order a new powerbook tonight. My only concern with the 12" PB is the heat, but I have seen them enough, heard enough positive things about the machine to make me feel better about it. I will hardly have it on my lap anyway, plus its got way more power than my "old" 17" iMac from last summer. Should compliment it well, I feel my switch is complete since I can be a mac user from anywhere now lol. Here is what my order will be in case you want to know.
12" PB Combo (already have a SD iMac)
640 RAM
60 GIG HD
AE Card
AE Base w/o Modem
iSight
Really excited, I know create is next week I just don't care, this machine has enough power for me. I don't do any design, some light dreamweaver, but 90% of time I listen to music, surf the web, email, etc.

Hey mate,
I completely agree -- you could wait forever for the perfect machine to come out. Who knows when the 12/15" powerbooks will be updated. I bought a TiBook 867 yesterday... it will do everything I need it to do!
Have fun with the 12", i'm sure it will be a sweet machine!
Cheers.

btw, the iSight is an amazing product. If you can afford to get it with your 12" PB, go for it! It's changed my whole IM experience.

Well I hope your happy with your computer, but you know keep this in mind. You might of been better off waiting for a rev B of the 12. I will either get a Rev B 12 or a 15AL for college.

Yeah I thought about it, but for what I do I am not sure waiting will be worht the speed bump, if they bump them up to 1 gig, I am not sure I will see a huge difference with a extra 133mhz on the chip. Its already faster than my current machine, not by much but faster. If there was some concrete time table on when a rev b was happening maybe I would wait, or if it was gonna have a G5. But I think I will be fine.
All the same thanks for the tip.

Don't buy your RAM from Apple. You can get a 512 MB chip for $85 with overnight shipping from OWC--I should have mine today (or maybe tomorrow) I will let you know how it works. But I would wait and save yourself some money. check www.dealram.com for better prices than available through apple--just make sure that any RAM you buy has a lifetime warranty.

Yeah I am getting the ram elsewhere, I just wanted to post the final specs. Thanks for the heads up though.

Are you sure you can't just wait a few more days? You've already got a SuperDrive iMac to keep yourself busy, and you never know if it will be upgraded during next week's event. Even if you feel the upgraded specs wouldn't be worth it, you could get a discount on the price of the "old" model.
Just seems so close to an event to make a purchase like this. Just wait until the 15th! Apple seems to love Tuesdays.

Yeah I know, but I really am sick of waiting. If they are updated tuesday so be it. My biggest reason for not getting one of these machines earlier was the heat issue. But reports on that seem to be a non issue for some, while a big one for others, so mileage will vary user to user I guess.

First off, congrats on your new PowerBook Flash2000! They are great little machines. I was in the same boat not to long ago, though I did somehow manage to wait until the day after Steve gave his keynote at WWDC to make the buy. ^_^
I too don't care if they upgraded them or not soon. When I bought mine, I figured what the hell, it's not like this is going to be the last Mac I'll ever own. I'll get a G5 PB one day just like all those people waiting around for one to drop out of the sky, but until then why not enjoy things, you know.

How do you like the machine? Anything you don't like, you have any problems with the heat?

Flash2000: If the 12-inch PowerBook is updated on Monday or Tuesday, you can always (1) cancel your order, (2) ask Apple to honor the lower price on the now outdated 867Mhz model, or (3) ask to be upgraded to the Rev.B 12-incher. (This assumes that you ordered directly from Apple, which AFAIR offers an 8-day price protection guarantee.) If next week does not bring new PowerBooks, you'll still have the smallest fully featured PowerBook on the block.
Personally, my old iBook does everything I really need, so I don't mind waiting.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

I sort of had the same dilemma as Flash2000... tired of waiting for the updates. But I went with the iBook 900 instead of the PowerBook 12".
I bought the Powerbook when it first came out and didn't really like it. It was beautiful and sexy and all, but I thought for the price that the performance was a little slow. But I missed having a laptop and being away from OS X so I just picked up the iBook earlier this week. So far it's great... I like it more than the Powerbook but to each his own.
Good luck with everything and enjoy!

I was also waiting for updates, but figured what the hell. It doesn't matter when you buy your Mac... there will always be updates. I love my new 12" PB!
