I had an interesting thought today...

Everyone assumes that the next 15" PB will be a 15.4" screen, as rumors seem to indicate some company (whose name escapes me) was producing 15.4" screens for Apple...

Take a close look at the tech specs for the 17" PowerBook... the actual width of the display is exactly 15.4". I wonder, perhaps, if the rumors sites producing the 15.4" rumors are in fact mistakenly referring to the horizontal dimensions of the lcd already being produced for the 17"?

I think it's entirely plausible that someone would see 15.4" wide on a whitepaper or something and think... "hey, that must be the screen for an upcoming 15!".

Any thoughts?
Alex

15.4" screens at 1280x800 (WXGA) are already available for other laptops. Dell sells them for example.

I personally would prefer the 15.2" 1280x854 screen like in my TiBook, but I have no reason to dismiss the rumours, which say that Compal will be assembling the new PowerBooks with these 15.4" screens. I can't recall off-hand who actually makes the screens though. Samsung? LG? Others?

I think that Chi-Mei makes the screens in Taiwan. If you google 15.4 inch LCDs you find a variety of resolutions. Some quite high. Just have to wait till the new PBs come out to see what they are using.
Happy owner of a new 15" Al PB.

I would expect a 1280x800 screen. That resolution is in line with Apple's (and my) preferred pixel densities.

I prefer the extra 54 lines (854) of the DVI667 powerbook I have. More space for palettes.
