When I disconnect the power adapter from my ibook, it starts to make irrhytmic tapping sounds. If I adjust the volume or have some sort of audio playing, the tapping sound goes away. As soon as the audio sits idle, the tapping sound starts again. I have tried plugging in headphones and the tapping comes through them. When I startup in system 9.2 the tap isn't there only in 10.2.6. Furthermore, when the machine is plugged in it never taps?
Any ideas???

Does the "tapping" sound electrical?
There could be an issue with a power leak from the battery somewhere... a very minor short (bad word of choice.. more like a bleed), or something, interfering with the audio circuitry (probably AT the minijack)...

Follow up... it would have to be at a lower level than just the jack to do this, obviously... or the speakers would be unaffected.
If the speaker and lineout circuitry are shared and in series (thanks Reader50), then this would make perfect sense, but the power problem is at a lower level than just the output/speaker wires, etc.
Still, I think it's power, unless it's actually software...

Fax software installed? I know the fax software did that to our DA G4.

I am curious about the fax software issue. And you only had the noise when on battery power? I am guessing that it is not because of slow batter "bleed" because system 9 (when started from it) does not cause tapping sound????

Check your System Preferences - "Sound" pane - and see if there is a phantom input. Because there is no real input, the machine becomes very sensitive to static in the audio circuitry. When you boot into the other OS, you probably have different settings, so the problem isn't there.
Drove me nuts two days before I found it on my system. And the STF Fax seems to aggravate it, or sets it up, for some reason, as I have found on several other systems.
There are a couple other possible causes, but those require hardware. Your problem sounds more like software.
Hope this helps!

Okay, I checked the sound pane and the only input I have is the internal microphone. No so-called "phantom" input. I also don't have fax stf installed. I did adjust the microphone input volume, not sure if that will work though???

I have the same exact problem on my brand-new 900 Mhz iBook. It is really irritating...
There is a software fix I found, KeepSoundAwake: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13709
It plays a silent sound every few seconds and therefore the popping never starts. Hopefully, this is a 10.2.6 problem and not something with the hardware. If it's still there in Panther, I'll probably send it in to Apple, I don't want my speakers crapping out sometime.
