"Computer Requirements, Information, and the Berklee Laptop Purchase Program

Beginning in the Fall 2003 semester, Berklee College of Music will require all entering students to own an Apple Macintosh laptop computer that meets certain minimum standards established by the college. To facilitate this requirement, the college has made exclusive arrangements to purchase large numbers of computers from Apple Computer and software from manufacturers. This bulk purchase of computer hardware and software will provide a comprehensive system at an exclusive discount price that is well below the best market price for this package and allows us to include laptop insurance in the package at a greatly reduced cost."

updated YESTERDAY:

"PLEASE NOTE
Since we're still awaiting information from the manufacturers, specific details about the hardware and software requirements for each of the majors will be available on Monday, July 14th. Our apologies for the delay."

First, it was 7/1, then "week of 7/8", now a precise date: 7/14! Let's see!

Now that's what I call research! And from Switzerland?! Sounds like MacWorld will see the new Al 15", probably at "The Joz's" keynote. I switched my vacation week from this past week to next week just for MacWorld. Yeah, baby! Bring it on, Joz!!

Joz's presentation is on the 16th (Wednesday), but Apple often does Store updates on Tuesday.

I've been seeing posts about that website for weeks. It almost sounds like the author of the page is just guessing. By the way, the "requirements" policy is bizarre. Since when do you need the absolute fastest laptop on the market from Apple for basic usage? It would seem to make much more sense to post the minimum requirements now (for those already with OS X laptops), and then post the bulk discount details for new computers later.

Anyways, here's hoping for Wednesday. (Not that I'll buy anything, since I already have a GHz TiBook SD.)

That's disgusting, forcing students to buy computers. While they may not even be forcing all students, what happened to the labs and resources that were customarily made available to students when they paid their already considerable tuition fees?

Here, have some research from Switzerland :-))

http://www.berklee.edu/computers/faqs.html#5

"What are the minimum hardware and software standards of the Berklee Laptop Package?

The laptop package will include specialized hardware and software, as well as expanded services, that will support and enhance the quality of the Berklee educational experience. The special Berklee Laptop Package includes the following:

Apple PowerBook computer; the actual model will be based on availability at order time in July, but minimum specifications are: 15" screen, 867MH G4 processor, 256MB RAM, 60GB Hard Drive, DVD/CDR/CD-RW combo drive, Airport wireless card, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, USB, FireWire, audio in/out.
Microsoft Office (including updates while enrolled at Berklee)
Coda Finale (including updates while enrolled at Berklee)
SmartMusic Studio with microphone (including updates while enrolled at Berklee)
Midiman Oxygen8 keyboard controller
Special version of Propellerheads Reason adapted for Berklee College of Music (including updates while enrolled at Berklee)
4 years of AppleCare extended warranty
4 years of Apple Operating System upgrades
First year of insurance with $100 deductible. Insurance may be extended to include coverage for musical instruments at additional charge.

The final laptop model and specifications will be determined by July 15, 2003 and will be announced on Berklee's website, www.berklee.edu/computers."

Doesn't sound like guessing to me.

A PowerBook G4 seems apropiate to me for music works. Should they sell an iBook G3 to their new students?

Ah, didn't see that page. That makes more sense. The AppleCare part seems strange though though, specially since Apple doesn't traditionally offer 4 years of AppleCare.

Well, the date has changed several times, as you originally posted.

I wouldn't be surprised if the computers appeared this week, but if they were so sure of July 15 then why did they say July 1 or July 8 in the first place? Nonetheless, it's potentially good news for all the people out there looking for new machines.

A PowerBook G4 seems apropiate to me for music works. Should they sell an iBook G3 to their new students?
No, they should do what most schools do is recommend a computer but also provide some equipment on campus for the less rich students to use.

"What if I cannot afford to buy a laptop?

The cost of the minimum hardware and software package is covered under the college's tuition and fee schedule. Your decision to attend or not attend Berklee should not be based on your ability to purchase a laptop computer. If you are concerned about being able to afford a laptop, please share your concern with an admissions or a financial aid counselor."

AppleCare probably extended to 4 years in a special deal with Apple so students have warranty during the full time of studying at Berklee.

Actually I think the Apple Care is through the University. When I went to University of Dayton, all art students had to get a Mac...iMac, G3 Tower, or the PowerBook G3 at the time. The Apple Care was actually the University's tech center, but it was covered for 4 years.

This has nothing to do with new models not yet introduced. They are simply advising students to wait until the final purchase agreement with Apple has been completed. (My daughter attends the Boston Conservatory, next door to Berklee. Her best friend goes there, and received additional info in an earlier letter.)

I would suspect that a 'bulk buyer' will be a lot more informed than anyone else... It is the best evidence of new Alu arrivals I have heard in a while.

Time will tell.

I got a friend who was an intern at a little computer company. They provided networks and stuff for schools. But anyhow he was doing some kind of apple course there and he knew that the iSight was coming 3 months before it was released. And he can confirm that there will definitely be a 15" allu powerbook. Only he didn't know exactly when.

I have no doubt that a new one it coming!

However I am very curious as to what has caused the delay... The longer the wait, the more I can see Apple 'reinterpreting' the design...

My money is on a 15.4 screen with a 1.2ghz G4 only, BT etc, with a G5 coming this time next year at the earliest...but.... it has been 10 months now...

Exciting times!

Anyone can predict that a new 15 inch is coming. Only when that is the question most of the people in here are wondering about.

And that first an improved G4 before a G5 is sure as well.

I agree with some other posters that it will probably a 1.25 or 1.3GHZ with most of the specs of the current 17 inch.

Apple must have heard from many users that although they like the 17 inch very much it is too big in size for most of the users. You need to have a limit somewhere and believe that 15 inch is this as far as portables are concerned for the moment.

Once we have the roll up screen and much more thingies, goodies and accessories than 17 inch will be the obvious choice.

Hopefully this week will be the week when we get the revised Al15's. I think the Berklee site may be the best proof yet of new Al15's very soon.

Before we depart completely from the Titanium design, I wanted to take you down memory lane. The Ti was a good design for its time, but it's time has passed. Bring on the new Al15's!

I may downsize to a 15" if they update to AL
or maybe the 17" would get a speed bump

Some sites are saying that the 15-inch Titanium is here to stay for a while longer but that Apple will be making it speedier.

I guess we'll see.

There might be some logic to that. The only Powerbook capable of OS9 booting is the Tibook. And, Apple is keeping a Powermac G4 in production for that very same reason even with the new G5's.

I wonder for how long...

His guess was 2 days premature. He was probably basing it on the Macworld NY conference that started today but the product expo doesn't start till the 16th. If we don't get anything out of the Apple rep then we have to look forward to Siggraph on the 27th.

We already know about AL books why make a big deal about it at an Expo. At most it will be mentioned. The G5 is the big deal right now. This PowerBook update is not a big deal at all when compared with the other big annoucements out right now. For people who are waiting for a 15AL its a big deal but remember its not a big deal for apple. Expect a relatively quiet update of the entire line.

I disagree. While speedbumps and new 'rev's are usually let loose with minimal fan fair, I would think that a whole new machine that would effectivly replace apple's 'Pro' line of laptops for many of us would have the introduction it deserves. If indeed we just get a speedbumped Tibook, I would agree with you, But i would bet on a good deal of "Hey, look what we got!" when the 15Al is released. IMO.

Well you could be right, and you made a good point. Yes, it may be mentioned but still is it a big deal for them when they got that G5 to show off. Steve already talked about the powerbook line so I still stand by my opinion. Although you may be right that it could be mentioned. Anyways I really dont care as long as it comes out sometime in my lifetime. I am practically pulling my hair out. Never thought it would take this long. I am now worried that Apple may be to busy with the G5s to even metion a new PB release for awhile. I sure hope that is not the case. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Yep, it sounds like they were simply guessing, or else were posting info based on incorrect information given to them.

There's still hope for Tues. or Wed. though. Even though I'm not buying, it's about time that the PowerBooks are updated.

2003H2 is when the new 7457 G4s are supposed to come out anyway, and it's now 2003H2.

You know who would know -- and I understand why he ain't talking -- is Seanyepez.

Sean posted a lot of forward knowledge about Apple PowerBooks that were fairly accurate and moreso than any rumor site. I remember him alluding to aluminum PowerBooks after the last TiBook update. But he was beaten up pretty badly at one point on the forums and vowed not to say anything more about future product information he obtained.

He did say something to the essence regarding this product cycle that new PowerBooks would be released in July and he was right in the past and would be right in the future. That was back in April or so...FWIW.

We still have Tuesday and Wednesday.

Here, have another bite from www.berklee.edu:

http://www.berklee.edu/computers/faqs.html#5

"The final laptop model and specifications will be determined by July 15, 2003 and will be announced on Berklee's website, www.berklee.edu/computers."

If they announce a model from current configs, then wait until the Expo Paris in September.

Yeah! And if they don't announce a new model in Paris, wait until the Expo SF in January. Better yet, wait until 2007, when the 10 GHz Powerbook arrives.

He also stated, quite emphatically in December of 2002 that their would be no Powerbook updates at Macworld SF 2003 and that the new Powerbooks would be out in July of 2003.

Of course, what really happened was quite different. But it should come as no surprise if the Powerbooks are speedbumped tomorrow at the keynote.

Which was true to an extend that the Powerbook 15" was not updated. Instead they came out with two NEW models.
